Hi Everyone, Its been a long time since I've poked my head in here. Raising kids and maintaining employment have taken over my life And since the big freezes of 2010 and 2011 in Texas, I haven't had much of an urge to push bondaries with palms (my cycads fared much better). Anyway, I had an old Dypsis Pembana left that was small and in a pot (and therefore protected during the freezes). A couple years ago, its roots became weak and it fell over. I thought it was doomed, but I put stakes in the pot and amended the soil - then put it in shade/ICU for the last 2 years (which never got below 29F here). Its been looking much healthier lately. Today, I was moving…

Remove palm inflorescence?

Is there any advantage to removing a palm inflorescence from a younger palm? Will it help it put energy into more leaves and trunk, or will removing it just encourage more energy into producing more flowers?

Palmy sites in Guatemala and/or Belize?

We're arranging a trip to Guatemala and Belize at the end of this month, and looking for any palm-related places that people recommend. The tentative itinerary has us around Antigua, Lago Atitlan, Lago Peten Itza (near Tikal) - all in Guatemala, and Placencia, Belize. Any ideas for excursions to see palms in habitat would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sago Palm Re-Pot
by geoffc- 3 replies

I have a sago palm in a fifteen inch pot right now. It looks great and has for about five years now. However I have a big twenty four inch pot unused that I would like to replant it in. I'm hoping that if I plant it in a bigger pot the plant itself would get bigger. Would you guys recommend this? If so, could anyone offer any advice on doing so?

It's truly a palm miracle!

I have 2 Foxtails, one in the ground for "experimental purposes", and the other in a pot as a backup for if experiment 1 goes south. Well, the backup was pushing out a spear this Spring, very slowly at that. The spear seemed to get to the size it should be opening, and it never did open. A new spear started coming in after that one, so I knew something was wrong. It couldn't be lack of fertilizer, as everything had been fertilized. Well, I decided to help the spear open. Bad idea, the entire frond died. The new spear began to slow down and is only partially open at the top, but has not moved for probably 2 months now. I decided to clean the palm up a bit as I noticed a sl…

I have 2 that look completely different. The one on the left was bought as plain c.macrocarpa online, is droopier, longer and greener leafs, and the stem is more brown. THe one on the right was bought as var. watermelon, more upright, lighter leafs, and stem is more orange.

As I posted earlier this week, I lost my large, mature Sabal palmetto Lisa to lingering damage from Hurricane Irma. But I still have two juvenile Sabal Lisas that I grew from seeds collected from a Ft. Myers city park. I have high hopes they will someday flower and set seeds like my first one. Here they are today. Sabal Lisa the larger Sabal Lisa the smaller

Weird Washy trunk
by Alex High- 3 replies

I noticed this on Street View in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Very unusual trunk with thicker and thinner segments running up the length of it. What do you think is causing this, is it natural or from pruning? https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3466386,-81.3978357,3a,42.6y,297.81h,113.75t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssEpapMW4oJ0hjawfJAj8QQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Seedling's leaves folding over
by downtownfish- 3 replies

I recieved 3 Areca Vestiaria from a friend that has too many of them. They are all small in size, no more that 9 or 10 inches. Anyway they were bare rooted when they were shipped about 2 weeks ago. I repotted them when I got them and they looked good. All three had small new leaves that were already opening when I got them. They open up nice then started to fold over, or roll. It has been raining here for about almost 2 weeks with out much sun. I don't know if they are just now responding to being bare rooted, are they getting too much water, or not enough sun. They are in a very shady spot in the yard, so I moved one out to get more light this morning. An…
