Sad day for me. Took out 400 plantings of areca’s to the base. Likely 2k individual stalks from 6ft to 15ft. Years to recover. Birds gone, 3 triple Christmas over 12ft of wood, trimmed the Bismarcks, ribbons and sabals at the same time. I feel naked. The inner fence of jasmine looks simi bare now without the backdrop. 😢 -

Smaller F2 natwood sending out a few new ones. I’ll take a couple update photos of the larger ones tomorrow along with some f2 trans woods. -

Recovery has been good so far, this fiji dwarf is on its way back with its second frond opening up with a 3rd spear behind it and some pics of what it previously looked like before this freeze. -

It’s nearly 13 years since I had the great fortune to first meet the legendary ( and extremely generous) Tassie Troy and I thought it’s time to pay homage to all those who have helped me , and those in the Palm pantheon , like Darrold and Colin and Jonathon, who visited in the early days ( when there were only tiny plants) and didn’t wonder, at least out loud , if anything would ever eventuate. Here are a few pictures .There are around 25 species including 12 of chamaedoria. Some like the big baueri , trachycarpus and forsteriana are hard to depict . Nothing can keep up with the torallyii. Of course all 4 Lord Howe Island palms love it here in Hobart. Mike

The one (formerly) nice coconut here that I was aware of and posted here previously is totally dead. I drove by today out of curiosity and it looks doomed. Owners haven't removed it yet but it doesn't look promising. They didn't protect it whatsoever, so not too surprising. Would've been interesting to see how it would've done with some protection. Another home nearby had its young foxtail likely killed - I see they've left it for now but bought a replacement foxtail that they planted in another spot in their yard. -

$60.00 was a significant amount for a bareroot small plant back in 1985 even though it sounds like a bargain for an E natalensis x woodii. It is a beauty and I'm curious if it pups much? My F1 horridus x woodii female is probably around 25 years old based on its size when I got it, It has one large pup, and two or three newer small pups, one of which is just beginning a flush. It thrives in the full coastal sun, even though it has become more filtered at times during the day as my palms have grown. I have 2 more seedlings of backcrosses of male and female F1 horridus x woodii, and the one in the ground in full sun is just pushing out flushes off to the side of the main flush, so it appears that one will have 3 caudices from a very young age. The main caudex on the older plant is clearly showing that it will flush as opposed to cone again; she's taking a little rest after pushing out 3 cones last year. I'm ok if she just gives me a nice big flush this spring. Here is the flushing pup, and main caudex but you can't see the flush about to emerge from the main caudex. -

Anyone have one growing in full sun conditions? I currently have one growing in full sun. I didn't know where else to put it. I'm hoping mine will do OK in the long run, but for now I see it doesn't love the full hot sun days. -
I would just water regularly by hand. 1-2 gallons a day, 3x a week. Maybe more in the heat of summer. Wait to fertilize until next spring. good luck! And welcome to PT.

Cycad cones and flushes

I have the same problem here in Central FL. I failed with several Transvenosus, Natalensis and at least two NatWoodi F1 seedlings. In full sun they'd just wither and die, either after winter frosts or in mid to late summer after our typical May and October hot droughts. It wasn't until talking to Neil in Cocoa Beach that I tried part to full shade. He has a coning sized F2 that looks amazing...in some AM sun and consistent PM shade. It hasn't coned yet, to my knowledge. After that I planted an F1 on the East side of my house with a big Arenga Pinnata for shade, and a couple of big Nat seedlings in similar spots under a Butia or trunking Revoluta. They have all done great for the past 3 or 4 years. -

Looking for a place to donate seeds in the Santa Barbara CA area
Sean Osborne posted a topic in Freebies
I have a seasonal supply of a number of species of palm seed. I would prefer to give these seeds to someone who wants them, rather than haul them to the landfill. I currently have 40+ Parajubaea cocoides seeds that need a home, plus a number of palms in bloom which will be producing seeds soon. Trees currently in bloom include: P. cocoides, 3 trees Brahea edulis, “Guadalupe palm” Nannorrhops ritchiana Wodyetia bifurcata "Foxtail" Chamaedoraea elatior "climbing bamboo palm" Chamaedoraea radicalis *schipii Butia odorata If you want these seeds, or know someone in the Santa Barbara area who does, please let me know. -

I think this is native to Kauai, the leaves are huge (over 5 feet across) and the tree has no trunk at all. Shade lover. Any idea who this is? I have a second one that needs rescuing.- 1 reply

I purchased several 9’ trunk Texas Sables that were planted 2 weeks ago. Any recommendations to assist with the process? Is it OK to use root stimulator, if so I’d appreciate a product recommendation. Otherwise I’m watering 3 times a week and have had staked up with 2x4s.

Sad - the end of an era. 🙏 It looks like it is up to us and the other I-4 denizens like @Plantking165 to keep the dream alive. We still have the former Smashburger coconuts too, at this point. I took a short ride to see if any of our long-term Adonidia merrillii are making a comeback. I did spot a few, but some of the other larger ones in the area are in doubt. It's hard to make out the new, half damaged fronds, but they have a shot. The bottle palm on the left and the Traveler's Palm on the right next to them is recovering as well. - Yesterday

Drove by the I-drive coconut today to see progress. It was removed. The tallest coconut in Orlando is gone. Ashane they didn't give it a chance to reciover. FWIW, the foxtail is doing quite well. -
Why not grow orchids?
Tracy replied to Matt in SD's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
It has a scent but not super strong. The one that has the wonderful fragrance is the Epidendrum lacustre. After the sun goes down, I walk out onto my back deck and can smell it even though it is around the corner off the side of a covered patio area. It is amazing how strong the scent is and how far it can travel outside. My assumption is that it must be pretty darn successful in its habitat in attracting its pollinator. In a couple of weeks the Epidendrum prismatocarpa should be in bloom and they are another very fragrant bloomer.
