We recorded a wider spread for minimums throughout the property with readings 34F-36F. Around 1am, the temperature started climbing. Like Ray said, we got bailed out of one night.

Planting a beccariophoenix alfredii how cold tolerant are they
Phoenikakias replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
At least 40% native soil in the mix. You can add sulphur pellets in to the deeper layers beneath the root ball. I usually dig about half the diameter of the root ball deeper and amend soil plus I try to loosen even deeper soil layers adding sulphur pellets at about 1/4 depth of root ball' s diameter. -

So that means very big beds! And I will add some native soil too. I don't see any other way; just planting Syagrus in the alkaline native soil won't be a good idea -
Hey @Allen…I meant to ask how the storm treated your region. Were you able to keep your electricity? I know you are an excellent protector but a loss of electricity can cause problems. Hope everything is ok…

Go for it Than. If difference in quality and properties is enormous between fill in and surrounding soil, the risk of the palm refusing to spread and deepen its root system is really serious. And you need in our climate extended and deep root system for coping better both with drought and cold. -

These stones look similar to those I am planning to get for my raised beds! They look great. Soil-wise I am totally lost. We don't have volcanic and rich soil here, let alone on sale. I understand that peat is not a good idea for the ground so pot soil should not be added in the ground. The only soil that is available on sale here is some sort of reddish sandy soil, very acidic (ph =4), high in iron but poor in anything else. It is good for drainage as it is full of sand but poor in nutrients. So, my idea is to buy that and benefit from its acidity and drainage and mix it with my homemade compost and native soil (very alkaline) + some sulfur. On top I can add worm manure. What do you think? -
Sat at 30 for a while then came up to 35 now. Odd. I expected 25 possibly based on last night. Some good news. Hope it keeps up, the forecast moderated a bit too.

This is the worst arctic oscillation index for Florida winter since 2010. It looks to stay negative which is pointing to more cold problems well into February. The longer that blackline stays under 0, the longer the door stays wide open for subsequent cold blasts. Notice the last time it was above 0! You know, La Nina winter, warmer than normal 🤬

Should be a few less skeeters and flies this year.

I believe this was recorded Tuesday PM. Homestead is where landscape plants are grown, large-scale. Like I said, Miami is not tropical. Forget Köppen.

That bodes bad for the summer when folks need the reservoirs full.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale both just hit 88F degrees Monday January 26th, which were record high temps for that day. The all-time coldest recorded temperatures ever for both cities is 28F degrees last reached about 50+ years ago. At those temps, there would be some major damage of just about everything with obliteration of vast swaths of plants. Those numbers are being thrown around here, but it will be quite an event if it were anywhere in the low 30s. It’s hit freezing here overnight just 3x in about 50 years. 1x in the past 30 years. Hope it doesn’t come to that.

Ive got 1 that split a few years ago i finally planted it hopefully it will speed up because slow is an understatement -
At it again planting a few more in the ground, a nice paludosa, I even managed to get a couple of baby suckers of that one I shall see how they go, and this one was labeled as poiveana but I looked it up and it said solitary, so a bit of confusion on this little dypsis. The usual adscendens for a bit of fun, and a trio of gracilis getting thrown in the ground in the understory m. All under irrigation and well watered in a bit of time and that tropical look will be worth the wait.-

Thanks for the tour. It's good to see diversity. I have seen similar to these ones being sold as Dypsis (I think now is Chrysalidocarpus) pembana but I also remember reading about some people who has this palm and they said is a different Dypsis/Chrysalidocarpus. Yes, you're right, this is a Ranenala madagascariensis which is quite tender, much more than Hyophorbe verschaffeltii. In that place, loos like they planted a small coconut in 2014 which unfortunately didn't survive to the next year. Not such a bad try but probably they should have kept it closer to the house.
