Repotting Howea

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum but I've been following your posts for some time. I need your help please in repotting a Kentia palm, about 1.4 meters height plus a 23 cm pot, roots coming out through the bottom. Soil looks like a combination of bark and very light soil so very good drainage. I have it since I bought it so not sure about exact ingredients. I water about once a week in the summer and about once every two weeks in the winter. As you'll notice, there are 7-8 Howeas in one pot, a bit crowded, so my other question is: do I need to split them when repotting or should I just keep them as they are until growing larger? being conscious about palms i…

C. elegans

C. elegans, the most underrated palm ever. It grows everywhere on earth, requires little attention, and its gorgeous. I found the one on the right last week at my local sprawlmart, removed 90% of the seedlings and got this triple. I'd love to see more. Eventually they'll go to to the garden, until then I enjoy them up close. My last dollar for scale.

Lytocaryum weddellianum - Repotting
by benko- 8 replies

Hello all, I have a Lytocaryum weddellianum growing on my kitchen window sill which is south facing. It has been doing really well and continues to grow through the winter months! I have noticed it's roots are starting to pop out the bottom of the pot, I was wondering if any of you think I should re-pot it in a few months or just leave it in its current pot for longer? I am thinking of getting a Lechuza pot for it with Lechuza pon. I have only been watering when the soil is close to drying out, allowing the water to drain. Also does anyone know how it copes with root disturbance? If you could let me know your thoughts it would be greatly appreciated.

The German clay product is not available here. What would be the closest product? LECA and is not as absorbent I have been told,Or is seramis just a form of LECA? Zeolite breaks down. What about lava rock or scoria, would that be any good? What about hydroponic clay balls?

Watering with ice cubes?

Subject came up on a Google news feed for indoor plants, not specifically indoor palms but got me to thinking about this since over watering is the #1 killer of indoor palms. I have done it with Orchids and occasionally with potted palms but not as my mainstay watering program. Anyone here that has done this long term? and how did your palms do?

Maybe my apartment style living dictates it, but I love potted palms and just can't get enough indoor plants. It's such a gift to have them flowering and am so surprised by how wonderful they smell! Hope you enjoy.

Hello everyone. I spent way too many hours last night perusing the forum and being intimidated by the vast amount of knowledge y'all have so I thought I'd make an account to ask for your sage advice. I am brand new to palms and plants in general. I bought a beautiful Bamboo Palm specimen (Am unsure of exact species, would appreciate if anyone can identify) I named Robert. I was told he was going to be around 4ft, but when delivered he arrived at 5'8" (with spider mites which I am currently trying to handle) which was a lot bigger than expected, and now within 3 months has grown to almost 7ft, which presents a predicament for me as my ceilings are only 7ft tall. So my…

My Nano-Greenhouse

Only when a seedling has problems with its roots (as in this case with a L itapebiense seedling without a real radicle) I am using a (kind of) greenhouse. In all other cases my window sills (for seedlings) or my living room (around my home office for bigger ones) is enough (without any humidifier), no matter if the palms are »tropical« (as e.g. Licuala) or not.

Pygmy Date, Christmas, and Majesty Palms
by Phil413- 5 replies

Hi, I really don't know much about plants or trees but I love palm trees. I recently bought a christmas palm, majesty palm, and pygmy date palm put them all in large pots. I have read some conflicting information about whether or not to keep them on the back porch since it's spring. I live in Oklahoma and it's been in the 90s lately, which is a bit unusual for this time of year. I really wanted to keep them in the house but some of what I read suggests they (don't remember which one) may go somewhat dormant. Should they be kept indoors or outdoors? If indoors, I have a room to keep them in and a window where they can get sun. They can also be placed in there w…

washingtonia robusta Washingtonia Robusta re-potting and Root growth!
by RobustaEnvirons- 1 follower

I decided to take the next step as PalmatierMeg long ago suggested and I re-potted my oldest Washy (that I bought from Nevada on ebay last August). I re-potted it in a more standardized black container, rather than the clear Powerade bottles I've been using up til now. And boy was it a job cutting the Powerade bottle down the side. I hope I didn't cut the roots up or anything while doing this. I tried to be careful but it was hard to cut and all with the roots right up against the walls. It now looks as if it did indeed need re-potting! Geez, there's a lot of roots here. There was still a lot of potting medium that fell lose though. I can now see that because I…

Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) needs repotting

I was wondering why my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) was not sitting level on the shelf, until I picked it up and noticed roots growing out and under the pot (photo below). Am dreading having to repot it knowing how they dislike any root disturbance. However, last autumn I was having to water it every 4 days or so and it used to be able to go 10 days without watering, so I knew the time was coming for a bigger pot. I last repotted it 2 years ago when I adopted it in April 2017 (Photo below). When I received it from grower it was potted in a wet peaty mixture, awful media for the plant. I repotted it in 2017 and the root ball completely crumbled and …

Office Squad Redux.... Umm advice?
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

So long story short I moved from one hotel to another, and I've got a much larger floor to ceiling window but a much smaller windowsill to plop plants into. I've got roughly a 5" window ledge now. My last job, I had filled the windowsill with mostly aloes and succulents - but since I have a much larger window I'd like to bring in palm seedlings. Window faces south and previously cooked aloe vera and formerly dypsis Lutescens due to orientation of winter sun.

Streaks in Kentia Palms’ new growth
by Elsie- 4 replies
- 2.1k views
What could be causing this streaking in the new growth of my young Kentia Palms? They’re in a front of huge windows but there are large overhangs so they get very little direct light. They recently had the beginning of a scale problem but that seemed to be mitigated with neem oil. Now I’m worried I might lose all of them. Any help or experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

Just bought a Lytocaryum hoehnei from net... it seems happy but the soil is normal potting soil and it was outside under other trees... I might want to bring it inside or keep it on deck and keep it in pot... @Pal Meir Pal and @Kai , I need your expertise here again : should I change the soil to your formula using Seramis? also I am not sure does it like direct sun like Lytocaryum insigne or not like Lytocaryum weddellianum? what else should I consider for this?

Anyone else successfully grow Ravenea rivularis

Anyone get their indoor Majesty palm to grow and open spears into fronds? Thing is I live at 7,000ft in Flagstaff a fairly dry mountain climate so its very dry indoors usually. It is in the kitchen which give it a little more moisture and heat from cooking. After 1 year of the original transplant from the nursery container I had used some cheap organic generic fruit fertilizer I had laying around. It's mostly bone meal and has a good amount of nitrates. At first I was thinking it had low potassium as the leaves were sort of yellow on some fronds but I checked the soil it wasn't too soggy so then I figured it just didn't get enough light and I pretty much left it there in …

Easily Sourced Potting Mix

I've seen some great and well designed potting mixes on this site. However, all the recipes I have seen contain some fairly exotic (at least to me) ingredients. I was wondering if anyone had a pretty good mix design that includes ingredients that could easily be sourced from your standard home improvement or garden store (for example, Home Depot or Lowe's for us Americans). I'm not expecting the world's best potting mix, but something better than the typical pre-mixed "palm and cactus" soil that is found most places. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Lipstick palm getting yellow/orange tips
by JANAIY- 1 follower

Hi, my lipstick palm is developing yellow/ orange/rusty tips only on one separate plant in the same pot. After it totally yellows down (first leaf from bottom) I cut it off and than the next following one starts to do the same. The main plant is fine other than maybe a few yellowing differently. It is most time in the shade and now I started to put it in the sun as well. It gets watered everyday and gets a specific palm fertilizer every other 3 month. I let it stand in water since I bought it in February this year and the water gets renewed every day. It has been growing nicely and I keep my eye on it daily. I really need to understand why the single palm’s leaf (i…

Wodyetia Bifurcata in Pot
by nitsua0895- 7 replies

Does anybody have experience with growing these in pots? Do they prefer lots of moisture or drier soil? And whay type of PH do they like? I used a mixture of potting soil, perlite, and then a light layer of sand on top. I've been looking up their native enviornment and it seems they receive lots of rain during part of the year and then experience a very dry period as well so I assume they would tolerate drier conditions.

To Pot-up or to Plant in ground
by Danilopez89- 28 replies

I've been wondering weather it would be better to plant my coconuts in the ground already or to pot them up in bigger black containers. After going outside earlier and putting my hand to the black container and seeing how hott! it gets I decided to pot them up! I also put my hand to the green containers and and they weren't even hot, just a bit warm. I figured since the ground would never be able to keep the roots as warm as these containers do during the cold months it would just slow the palms growth and development. Maybe next year they'll get a chance at the yard. But I don't know.... I think I can get them to grow pretty big in a large black container …

Little Roystonea Regia in pot
by spikemc- 3 replies
A few years ago, I germinated seeds of Roystonea Regia that currently measure about 1 meter tall. I have them in a semi-shade place (2 hours of direct sun). This is one of them. As we all know, these are plants for full sun, but when they were little I wanted to protect them from the direct sun until they will become stronger. I'm in 9b area (Valencia-Spain), so my idea is to grow in a pot (to move and protect in hot areas during winter) until they start to make trunk and then pass them to the ground as they will be stronger to resist the winters here (rarely below 28ºF ). My question is: With this size it would be convenient to start giving th…

Watering Rhopalostylis baueri
by David_Sweden- 11 replies

Hi. My Baueri is very thirsty. I had it for 2 years and repotted it a few times and it has now reached what I intend to be the final pot size. Until a few weeks ago it needed watering every 3 days but since recently it requires water every 2 days. I can not combine normal life with plants that require watering more than every 3 days (my even bigger Kentia requires it every 6 days) so I'll either have to give it away or find a different watering solution. I just started testing putting a bowl instead of saucer under it (see pic), and after I completed watering I add water to 1-2 cm from the brim. This water lasts about 1½ days so that I have to water every 4 days. I w…
