Coqui Frog - Friend or Foe? 1 2
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Some people love them for both their lullaby and the fact that they eat a ton of bugs, others absolutely detest them. Some don't have them yet and are terrified at the thought of them arriving in their gardens. Others go out of their way to sneak them into their garden. Where do you stand? Take the poll. If you've never heard them, here is a nice little recording. In some Hawaii jungle settings, their collective song can reach 65db. Some interesting facts about the coqui: it's rapidly disappearing in its native habitat, The big Island of Hawaii is actually one of the few places where it's thriving. This frog has actually become the center-piece of a new move…

March 2014 Stock Talk
by tank- 35 replies

Lots of market bubble talk. Definitely appears to be a big one in the Fuel Cell business. FCEL released a decent ER last night and it appears to be vying for the lead on who will inflate the bubble the most. Question is, if PLUG does have a decent ER on Thursday (Wednesday night?) will it become Tesla Jr.? If the ER is seen as bad will PLUG, FCEL, and BLDP deflate 50% or more as their bubbles pop?

Wills & Estates
by palmislandRandy- 16 replies

A recent death in our family prompted my wife & I to talk about estate planning & updating our wills. The thought of my garden/plant collection & what will become of it when I'm no longer in the picture came to mind. I definitely don't want my obsession to become a burden on my wife & family, as I know the time involved in maintenance . I do want what desirable palms & plants that can be transplanted to ultimately end up in a public park. I'm also going to allocate funds to properly move them & to restore the areas where plantings were removed. I for sure don't want them sold, but prefer them to be donated. How do you value plants for an estate? H…

Go! Hawaii ceases operation
by bgl- 5 replies

Not exactly surprising news, Go! Airlines will cease operations as of March 31, 2014. Despite its name, this is not an airline in itself, but simply a marketing ploy by Mesa Airlines of Arizona. Mesa entered the Hawaii market under false pretenses several years ago with a small fleet of uneconomical 50 seat CRJ aircraft and have been attempting to compete against Hawaiian Airlines with (generally) lower fares. Not a very bright concept and this decision probably should have been made long ago. It leaves Hawaiian Airlines as the only carrier in Hawaii operating jets between the four main islands.

Autopsy of a palm
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies

Since we talk not of a live palm but of dead (since some years ago) one, I thought proper to open a new topic in this sub-forum. I have found clearing part of my garden the remains of this palm. It had been bought as Dypsis decipiens at a seedling stage. As it grew older however it looked like that all leaves used to grow in three rowes. Ok I know, many of you may say instantly that only decaryi has this trait, but I admit that I have seen pictures of young decipiens in this forum, which give also the impression of a three row leaf arrangement. So this is the dead body and any identificatio attempt is most welcome!

Very happy palmy birthday Dinesh, Seeing your profile I understand you are an expert about palms, though we don't see you so often on Palmtalk. But I think I saw your book in our friend Thabit Suby's expert hands in Colombo. I imagine you saw Bentinckia condapanna in the real wild life; you should post some topic! Kindest regards Philippe
