I've always been curious as to when most people plant their palms in their gardens so I decided to make a simple poll.

R. excelsa propagation

Since I'm running out of non-clustering palms, and also since every little garden these days has a bit of Rhapsis excelsa, I thought I'd keep one too, in a pot though just 'one'. So today at a friend's lawn, I've cut a shoot growing off a basal sucker at a point about 4-5 inches below the soil - the 'root' is actually mostly the sucker (as thick as a pencil) with some wispy new ones forming. Is this OK to be planted ?

Phytosanitary Certificates from Panama
by Dr. George- 8 replies
- 1.2k views
We have a friend in Panama City, Panama who has offered to provide us with some seeds but knows nothing about the process of obtaining a Phytosanitary certificate. Shipment would be to a location in Hawaii that has a valid USDA import permit. Is there anyone in Panama or experienced with the Panamanian bureaucracy who might be able to mentor our friend through the process? Please feel free to PM me with questions or information. Thanks for any assistance - gmp

Hmmm, so what do you think this is?
by realarch- 8 replies

Have been growing a couple of these little guys for the last year and a half and not sure what they are. I want to say the seed was supposed to be Pinanga kuhlii, (coronata) but certainly not the case. Spiny little devil, but beautiful at this stage. The spines on the underside of the leaf remind me of Bactris.

Thoughts on Blue
by MattyB- 24 replies
- 1.8k views
I've been formulating some rough observations about what effects the amount of blue a palm exhibits and I was wondering what your thought are on this as well. I always assumed, or maybe I was told, that the hotter, sunnier, and drier a species like Bismarckia, Brahea armata, Chamerops cerifera, Brahea decumbens, etc., were kept, then the more blue powdery coloration they would exhibit. But I'm starting to doubt this theory. Paul has a super blue Brahea armata in full shade and it has access to regular irrigation. My (7) Brahea armata seemed to be losing their blue coloration although they were all planted on a hot, south facing slope, in full sun, and watered sp…

What would you do?

Here is the scenario. You are moving to a wet area of Hawaii but you may only plant any 20 palms of your choice on your property. The cost or size of the palms is not a factor, just the quantity limitation of 20. Which 20 species and/or cultivars would you choose?

Quick Question about some yellowing on old fronds
by FallbrookCA- 3 replies
Just a quick question, is this type of yellowing normal on a leaf thats over two years old? I planted this palm at least two years ago, but I have just recently planted grass, and installed a sprinkler system. So I'm assuming its normal since the new leaves look great, but maybe its a nutrition defieceny? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question, its my first home, first time planting palms, so just checkin.

Help with my 3 -15' Trachycarpus Fortunei please
by TropicPalms7- 11 replies

Hey everyone I have a few questions about my Trachycarpus Fortunei. I have 3 approx. 15'-20' tall and they were all doing great until i cut down 30 huge trees which provided lots of shade. My 3 windmills are suddenly not doing good at all and appear to be getting burned and getting way too much sun. Im not sayin this is the problem but it looks like there burnt... one of the chusan windmills got hit directly in the heart of the palm by a huge branch of a tree... i thought it was dead but it still has a little green coming out but right as it gets over 4 inches sticking out it browns and dies... the trees arent dead so i really would like to try to save them! thanks all of…

Palm planting weekend: 8/21/10

This past Saturday I got out pick and shovel to plant palms in the back yard. Here are the lucky ones that got to settle into Mother Earth. Butiagrus seedlings 1 & 2. These have grown quickly since germinating 6 months ago. As they will laugh at my winters I wanted to get them in the ground so they can grow into wind blocks. Butiagrus 1: Butiagrus 2: I planted 2 Chamaedorea glaucifolia seedlings in my Chamaedorea patch. Very nice Chamaedorea oblongata Chamaedorea plumosa Gaussia attenuata 1 & 2. Gaussia maya. These seedlings have struggled for me. Maybe this one will thrive in the ground. Ptychosperma salamonense 1 & 2 …

Rainy day palms
by PalmatierMeg- 18 replies

The rains arrived in force Sunday. Monday was non-stop rain until a break after dinner. We got 6"+ and much of it went into the canal system. So the Isabelle Canal flooded our dock and toyed with the lip of the seawall. I thought our back yard seemed quite photogenic despite dreary skies. From the east side of the shade garden looking west. Kentiopsis oliviformis beside path. What a great palm. I have 2. Middle of garden. Dypsis catechu dwarf on right center. Northwest corner. Dictyosperma album rubrum on right. View across walk at garden-in-process. Large palm is Dypsis pembana On seawall looking east at shade garden Another view to northeast. Que…

Frond Streaking
by palmislandRandy- 11 replies

Any ideas what's causing this yellow streaking on my Hydriastele kasesa? I haven't fertilized recently, so I ruled out fert burn. Now and then I've seen the same streaking on a neighboring Calyptrocalyx, but others are fine. We've had some decent rain the past few days. Is it fungal? Thanks in advance for the help! Randy

Hi again... This is the 2nd variety in need of a name. Initially, I thought it to be a Chamaedorea-ernesti-augusti? Then again, on closer look the bifid tips are straight jagged not pointy. Sorry the stem pic. not too sharp(clear). Any help with ID appreciated! Thanks again...janie

Hi all, During a recent forest (virgin rainforest) walk, saw lots of these attractive understory palms with leaflets looking very similar to the fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) except its head leaftlet. Most are around 3-4ft tall. Have checked some of the Iguanura sp. online but still no clear match. Am i on the right track? Please help.. Thanks janie

Palmy South Florida 1 2
by RainForestt Robert- 43 replies

Since I lived in West Palm Beach more than a decade ago, South Florida has been one of my favorite areas. It is where my love for palms was first nurtured and I love returning as often as possible. The combination of entertainment, shopping and palmy options is pretty impressive and provides activities for every member of my family. I recently visited for a week and as usual had great fun. Here are a couple of photos. One of our first stop was the Museum of Science and Discovery. It was a ton of fun. We took in an Imax show, took a ride on the flight simulator and the Mars Rover and enjoyed the exhibits. A highly recommended stop. Once we were finished we s…

To move or not to move
by PalmsZA- 12 replies

Hi All This palm has been sitting around doing sweet nothing while the rest of the jungle is growing up around it. It did start off in some nice light but that is disappearing fast. It doesn’t look too hot either....So should I dig it up and move it to sun or should I leave it be? It’s been in the ground for almost 5 years and was the largest plant at the time... Apologies for the poor pic quality.
