Just a simple question for most of you... What is the best tool to cut off the old leaflets / clean the trunk of a sabal palmetto? I have tried numeros things and im sure there's something out there that's easier and cleaner. Thanks in advance for all of your help! -Justin in VB

Attalea humilis
by PalmatierMeg- 0 replies
I received nearly 2 dozen Attalea humilis seeds from the FNGLA auction site a few weeks ago. I left them alone until I was sure summer heat arrived. This past weekend I set 6 of these seeds soaking. I plan to put them in individual tallpots with cactus soil and plenty of perlite then place them in the shade so heat and humidity work their wonders. That is how I germinated my only Attalea butyracea seedling in 2009. Does anyone have any suggestions on germinating this palm and care of seedlings? Who else has grown it and can you provide photos? Thanks.

I just cann't believe my eyes after checking a couple of my winsan whose new spears are about 10cm long. I found last year some winsan with 3 ridges and Jim said it could be the upsidedown of 2 ridges. It just confused me that Wisan may not have 2 ridges. So I pay extreme attention to its number this year. Before I go into the subject, let me explain something. Yes it is possible that we could confuse the upper side with the lowe rside of the leave. But,there is one easy way to distinguish between them. The " real" upperside is the side where the brown sheath is and plus it has fewer ridges than the lower side. Say, regular Trachycarpus has 4 ridges on its upperside…

In the ground or in a pot ?
by peachy- 8 replies

I have a Pelagodoxa henryana, a Verschafelltia splendens and a couple of Siphokentia beguinii in pots that I was going to bring indoors this winter. However I was told by someone that they would do better in a protected spot, planted and very well mulched. It can get to freezing here and sometimes even a bit below but only a rare frost, (3 in 13 years) and they would be well protected from those. The daytime temps however are always quite warm, always in the 20s (celcius). Any ideas or theories to help a poor old lady about to start sleeping in a corner due to all the palms that have to come indoors soon. Peachy

Unless there's another bifid Chamadorea,
by John Case- 3 replies

On the way to wine tasting on Friday, we usually stop at the nurseries on the way to Napa. At one of my favorites, I found this; This looks to me to be a female Chamadorea metallica.....unless there is another bifid Ch. with metallic leaves. The lower leaves are very green and I am fairly confident that I am right. I am also certain there will be someone here to correct me if I am not. I bought it, even though I had one from last year with no flower spike to identify its sexual preference. Once home, I went right to the garden and checked out the one in the ground and found this: Looks to me I have a potential mating in the future, timing and all. I need to…

OOPS I did it again...

Today began normally, the groceries, the butcher, the chemist, the jewellery shop, the shoe store. I came home, unloaded Tojo's Revenge, then remembered I had promised someone a couple of palms, who lives close to the city, so off I went. Now I knew that a nice palm nursery was only a few kilometres out of my way, so I took a small amount of cash, just enough to get a couple of things I was really after and maybe a tad more if there was something wonderful sitting there. Well, 'pon my soul, the BABE was working today. Bravely I resisted the flashing smile, the helpful advice and just bought what I went there for. Proud of me ??? Don't be...he dropped the shades and gave m…

I realize this pic is pretty poor and the plant itself is only a seedling, but a member in northern New South Wales is wondering what this is. Considering his location is in Livistona australis territory, that'd be my guess. Any thoughts?

These 2 pics are about 12 days apart. April 26 to May 6. It's been in the ground since the Searle's brothers last show which I think was in March. My next time to fertilizes is June 1st. I wondering if I should hit it now with some regular palm fert. Or maybe some Nutricote. Help please, this will be the 3rd Carpoxlon I've killed. I do have it on a make shift drip. Should it be getting more water?

The perfect palm?
by markpeters77- 9 replies
In contrast to chris.oz's "Ugly Palms" thread, I was wondering what people's idea of the perfect palm would be. I'm not meaning an existing species but which aspects of certain species would you put together to create your perfect palm? If anyone's good with photoshop, feel free to show us what it would look like too! I'll start with the foliage of a Corypha opening with the red of a Chambeyronia, supported on the trunk of a Ceroxylon with a cone of Socratea stilt roots.

I Still Just Can't Resist
by Jim in Los Altos- 9 replies

I can't grow these dang things here but when I see a nice one available, I can't resist the temptation. They're just so cool. Maybe I'll get a few years out of this one if I overwinter it inside. It's planted in 75% beach sand and 25% Miracle Grow Moisture Control Potting Mix in a 5 gallon metal container. The coconut palm was only $15.00. Here she is in all her glory. (My collies are keeping an angry eye on a big egret). The nut is quite sizable. Is this a gold Malayan dwarf variety? Here's the hungry egret my dogs are keeping up on my roof and away from my koi.

Here's a few photos of my two betefaka, and the seedlings in front are from the betefaka seeds that I started last year, and yes Bill, cause I know you will notice, those dark green seedlings in the background are D. marojejyi, Mad Foxes, only doing so well because of the one hour or so max.direct sun they receive, and they all are hand watered with rain water only, unless I run out of coarse, I think the rain water does make a diff., Ed

Petroleum Powered Paraphenalia

I stihl like my chainsaw for taking down a tree but have been looking at that bow saw again... I do love my green and yellow weedeater but that weedcutter isn't that much work and is a bit more fun! Gas powered pole saws are a cinch but the toothy manual version can get the job done, usually in one slice... I flat out hate hedge-trimming and won't ever own my own hedge but pruning shears don't seem all that bad... How about that push mower at sears? The gas powered version with a briggs and stratton is only $20 more than the heavy old school manual push version... What's up with that? In light of the current oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, I ca…

Propping up leaning palms .. or not

Hi all, just some advice please. I am have been growing Trachycarpus Oreophilus from seed for the last five years or so, and I am noticing that they have developed a strange growth habit in that they tend to grow at a 45 degree angle to the ground. I have repotted two of them so that they are straight up and down, but the fact that they are ALL growing sideways makes me think that this may be a proper growth habit. (I am pretty sure that its not a growing medium issue, as other palms in the same soil seem to like their 90 degree growth habit..) Am I doing them a disservice by straightening them out? or .. Thanks. Jody

Dealing with high pH soils
by Tyrone- 6 replies

Lately I've been dealing with high pH sandy soils, trying to help different people get their gardens performing on limestone. These are common along the western coastline of Australia right up into the tropics, and I know certain parts of Florida and the Keys have the same issues. These soils are basically marine derived and have large amounts of Calcium carbonate often in percentages in the soil. Dropping the pH even a couple of points can be extremely difficult due to the actual presence of pure Calcium carbonate rocks in the soil. Typically these soils are in excess of a pH of 8 and can go right up into the 9's. The theory is, if your raw soil has a pH of 8.4 or above …

Does pot size effect growth rate/robustness?
by newtothis- 5 replies

If you have a new seedling, will it grow faster if you put it right into a big roomy 15g pot? Or does it benefit the roots somehow to let them fill out a 1g, then 3g, then 5, etc. I'm talking natural size not shade stretching.

Hi all! I've had these two Livistonas for several years now, and I've got this leaf tip burn / browning issue. It's been going on for years and I'm really unsure about what it is. At first (several years ago) I thought it was a deficiency, so I naturally got things to correct a potassium/ magnesium deficiency. I've been working at this correction for a while now and am seeing no improvements. It's really frustrating. If anything, the tip burn is increasing. It started at the oldest fronds and is working it's way up. But, the tip burn is mostly prevalent on the side that faces the sun. I see it now on the portion that faces to the north as well. I talked to Dick…

Keeping treepots upright

I've now started transplanting my seedlings from .5 liter water bottles into 1 gallon treepots. I have a question though, my treepots don't seem very stable, as they are so long. What do you guys do to keep them upright? So far I have gotten away with jamming them between other pots, but this can only go on for so long before I need to find another way. Any suggestions? Keith

For spot treating, I use a tablespoon or so of Murphy's Oil Soap in a quart spray bottle of water. It seems to knock back mealybugs, aphids & ants on in ground palms (or maybe I'm just drowning 'em). Coffees been discussed, so any other home made brews?? Something that can be mixed in small batches for spot spraying & also for scale? Randy
