Birthday palm - definition:

1. A palm someone gives you for your birthday.

2. A palm you buy yourself for your birthday.

3. A palm you plant on your birthday.

A year ago I planted three Bentinckia condapanna in memory of Robert J. Riffle, and added a few posts in the "Palms for RLR" thread at that time. A little while ago I added another updated photo of all three palms. And I decided to make a tradition of planting a palm (or two, or three...) on my birthday. So today I planted something that's very unusual here in Hawaii: a Hedyscepe canterburyana. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a Hedyscepe in a Hawaiian garden. So, here it is - my first one. I do intend to pland a few more! :)

A few days ago I visited Floribunda Palms, and bought a bunch of palms (see the Big Island thread). One particular palm I was very happy to be able to buy was Loxococcus rupicola. I bought ten of these, in 4 inch pots, from Floribunda in Sept 2003 and planted all ten. Unfortunately, thru a series of unfortunate circumstances (someone - and that wasn't me - weedwhacked a few of them when they were still small, and a few died for unknown reasons), I now only have three of them left. Those 3 are doing just fine, but I would like to add a few more. So, when Jeff listed them on his recent pricelist I knew it was time for another visit there. And here they are: 25 little happy Loxococcus seedlings. This time I'm going to grow them up to a nice size befiore planting them!

And this Loxococcus rupicola is one of the three survivors - just to show what they'll look like a few years from now! A very attractive little palm.

And this one has nothing to do with the birthday palms, but didn't have any other place to post the photo.... This is a Dypsis sp. Orange crush that's opening the new frond in a somewhat unorthodox manner!

Very good idea Bo, at least you'll have no trouble knowing which date they were planted. The Condapnna look real nice. I was contemplating getting some Hedyescepe seeds but now i'm definitely goin for it! Keep us posted on the Hedy.

Thanks Mike! And the three B. condapanna were gifts from Jerry Andersen a number of years ago. Now, after a year in the ground, the base of each palm is really bulking up nicely with amazing color. Will be very interesting to see how this palm develops. And I'll keep you posted on the Hedyscepes as well. Will probably plant another 4 or 5 in that same area.

And I hope others with future birthdays will add some of their palm photos here! :)

Nice palms Bo!

Phil, weren't you supposed to plant the crinita when you were 10?  :D

That way you could enjoy it's growth over the years  :P

Well, fortunately I already planted my quota of Coccothrinax crinita, so that's all taken care of! :P

And yes, life is definitely good. Should probably plant a few more palms, though... :D

This has to be one of the more beautiful palms I've seen.  From the deep red petioles that fade into yellow in the rachis, to the leaf shape.  I need one of those!  Can I ask where you got it?

Jerry Andersen (jdapalms) was kind enough to give them to me in Oct 2004 (1G size). It helps to have friends in high places! :D
