I was sorry to hear of his passing, even at his ripe, old age.  My admiration was not for his ascent of the Third Pole.  No one 'conquers' a mountain or Mother Nature.  It was his lifelong efforts to improve the lives of the Nepalese Sherpa people that I appreciated.

A good example of a life well lived.  Thanks for posting this Wal.

Darrold, while I agree with you that his greater accomplishment was his generosity to the Nepalese people, being the first to summit Everest catapulted him to fame and granted him the means to be generous.  

I think the whole "conquer the mountain" attitude is newspaper and tv-speak.  I don't recall ever hearing the term used by anyone I know who actually hikes or climbs.
