Bismarck going to seed

Featured Replies

I have 2 Bismarckias. They are getting really big. They are at a really nice size now. One is also 20260624_163834.jpgstarting to seed. I have a couple of questions. Is there a way to slow the growth of these? Should I do anything about the one that is going to seed? I usually cut the seed fronds off my other palms to avoid propagation and clean up issues.

Here's a good picture to judge the size. They were both planted together and were the same size. Now the bigger one is producing.

No seed worries, yet... Just pollen. That tree appears to be a male.

Those are very nice palms . I don’t think there would be any way to slow the growth down without compromising their beauty. Harry

Does look male to me, count your future self lucky. This is half of what you get 2x a year I just cleaned this up 3 weeks ago and the rest of the fruit fell. its already started a new batch which will fall in october or so. I would rather have a male, the fruits rot when you let them sit too long.

That's what I want to avoid. Can't I just remove the Pollen fronds now? Thanks for the replies

You absolutely can cut off the pollen, but there really is no reason to at this point. As a male tree, it will NEVER produce any seeds to clean up.🤷‍♂️

You are lucky bismarckias are dioecious, a species in which male and female reproductive organs exist in separate, distinct individual organisms. SO if you have a male you will not get any seed. Many palms are monoecious, that is a single plant produces both exclusively male flowers and exclusively female flowers. For reproduction to happen, pollen must transfer from a male flower to a female flower.
