I have been asked by Director Glenn Franklin to introduce the 2025 IPS Save the Species campaign.

This program began with the successful Tahina fundraiser which ran on PalmTalk.

It is now a very important part of our non profit mission statement (Education, Research, Conservation).

“ Our December Save The Species fundraiser is coming up for this small palm.

Ravenea louvellii is endemic to Madagascar.

Our fundraiser will help finance efforts to document additional palms, involve the local community and start a propagation program.

The team of botanists from Madagascar led by Dr. Mijoro Rakontoarinivo.

Over his professional coreer he has previously worked side by side with our own Dr. John Dransfiel and Dr. Bill Baker at Kew.”

More posts to come.

Cindy, it is exciting to see one of the Ravenea species being selected.  The question is:  Do you have a link for donating to this campaign yet?  The call to action step.

Good question!

I wondered that myself when I was asked to post the information.

I will follow up with the Save the Species committee and post a link when I can.

I got a quick response from the volunteer in charge.

The donation link will be set up very soon, well in advance of the official fundraiser start date of December 2.

Stay tuned.

Hopefully it will be a race to be first to donate!  Its to the starting blocks awaiting the starter.

More from the Save the Species IPS committee:

“Massive habitat destruction in Madagascar has reduced Ravenea louvellii to only a handful of palms.

Our Save The Species December Fundraiser takes a multi prong approach which covers documenting additional palms, setting up a propagation program and community involvement.”

From Dr. Baker (Kew):

”Thanks to the generosity of supporters of the IPS Save the Species campaign, a team from Kew and Comoros was able to complete important work on the endemic palms of the Comoro Islands. We have now completed our final report, which I’m delighted to share with you today - you can download it (in English and French!) at this link: https://zenodo.org/records/15924392

We were able to carefully survey all three islands in the independent Union of the Comores. We found Ravenea hildebrandtii and Chrysalidocarpus lanceolatus on all islands, but Ravenea moorei and Chrysalidocarpus cabadae only on Grande Comore (although the last is also reported from Mayotte). Palms are highly threatened on all islands, but the last two especially so. Chrysalidocarpus cabadae in particular is found only in coastal forests, which are highly degraded. Thankfully, our missions have inspired a new wave of palm enthusiasts and action to protect these species is already underway – please read the report to find out!

This work could only happen because of the passion and motivation of IPS members – we cannot thank you enough! Please continue to support the society – in its fundraising, by subscribing to its publications and by participating in its travel opportunities (look out for the Vietnam Biennial – it will be phenomenal!!!). With your support, we can do so much more!”

In a letter sent out by IPS President to the Board of Directors today, he reminded us that for the entire 5 years of the Save the Species now annual conservation effort we have met or exceeded our goals.

Remember the whole idea sprung from the PT run Tahina fundraiser!

This year we have only 5 days (until Dec 31) to make it happen this year.

I see we are 69 percent there meaning to those of us who have donated, thank you so much!

If you find yourself able, please kick in a little bit more.

To our big PT family, some of whom have not yet joined in, please send whatever fits your budget.

I know I feel proud that little by little I am helping to make a difference.

On behalf of Director Glenn Franklin , Chair of our Save the Species program I want to thank all of you who donated!

I understand there might be a paper check or two not yet added to the donation total but regardless once again the IPS will be sending significant funds towards fulfilling our conservation mission.

It took many hours of work done by Glenn and her committee to narrow down the 2025 project to select a project where we can make a real difference and then to explain and promote all on a volunteer basis. I am very grateful.

Stay tuned for an eventual progress report here on PT as well as in our journal PALMS and the IPS newsletters.
