After spotting this palm being advertised on Facebook group “Palm Nutters”,  I contacted the vendor (Cairns) on behalf of Colin Wilson who wanted it for Wollongong botanical garden, NSW.

Paul Latzias and Michael Smith stepped up to inspect the palm last weekend, and were joined by Arden Dearden to salvage her this afternoon.

Massive thanks to Paul, Michael, Arden, Digby (vendor), and of course Colin.

For those of you that frequent Facebook, I’ve set up a group called “Pommy palms”, where many of the palms I’ve seen since emigrating to Australia have been documented. If you wish to be a member, copy and paste “Pommy palms” into Facebook to view the page and click “Join group”.

A good home for such a beast of a palm. Hopefully not too root sensitive , I hope it does well. Harry

Let us know if it survives.  I'm curious if they transplant easy.

Based on our recent experience of transplanting 2 from Darwin to Brisbane’s Mt. Coot-Tha BG, it should be fine. Also the Darwin move was in winter and we are well into spring now. We’ve suggested to Colin that he might want to consider cutting a few more leaves off to reduce stress.

Both top blokes Tim, and completely nuts about palms.

Not long after transplant, the leaves started to desiccate so Paul cut her down to 1 leaf and 1 spear. In the tropical heat and humidity of Cairns she soon perked up.

Loaded up on Tuesday this week and heading down to Wollongong Botanical Garden as we speak. Planting location prepped and ready for her arrival.

Is Wollongong warm enough for Tahina to grow outside or is this going in a greenhouse?

Posted

How did I miss out on all of this happening ?

Good ol' Mr Wilson is determined to make the 'Gong a botanical paradise.

A major effort for all involved.

(and few more grey hairs that I am innocent of causing)

I am really hoping the transplant succeeds and it grows well.

Peachy

It is warm enough to grow Tahina in-situ outside. Wollongong BG is actually warmer than Sydney BG where they have a very healthy Tahina already growing for many years.

No effort on my part really. I just spotted it, informed Colin, and liaised with the vendor to secure it. Colin and Paul did most of the leg work, helped by Arden and Michael.

Wow, I wouldn't have expected that. I didn't see the one in Sydney last time I was there a couple of years ago, I've only seen one in person in Singapore. Perhaps they're a chance in northern NZ then, I wonder if anyone has brought them here? I'll have to make it over to Wollongong one day for a look!

I’d say it’s unlikely Wollongong BGs is warmer on average than Sydney. Perhaps absolute minimum, but all climate records of Sydney and Wollongong indicate Sydney is a tad warmer year round than Wollongong. Of course microclimate plays a role, but Sydney BGs’ is ideal right next to the CBD.

All that being said I have no doubt Tahina would do well in Wollongong as it seems trouble free in Sydney. I’d guess anywhere from Auckland to further north might be a chance to grow Tahina but not sure any seed ever made its way over there.
