One palm that grows to absolute perfection in my climate the weddlianum or wedding palm. Such a delicate palm when a seedling and is always popular as seedling with non palm nuts. I have had them sell as I deliver them to retail nursery being snapped up off the delivery trolley. There beautiful and even more so when mature and given a nice clean up. So easy to grow and germinate, I just love them!

I think this is the one that turned me into a full on palm nerd. Seeing Pal Meir's thread on these - I've still got one.

You can’t beat them for there small size and toughness. I first fell in love with them at the good old spring chicken stage of 18 years young!

it's an amazing palm indeed !
the best of all is lytocaryum insignis to me, much larger, more cold hardy, and can take sun easier.

I have about 100 insignis just germinated so ten years time I should have some nice examples! But the lytocarum genus are beautiful.

Just don't drop them and know they're very very very root sensitive and you're ok.

Eas6 to germinate, not a# sensitive as a Joey palm roots, I have seen them sent to holland by the thousands bare rooted, just tipped out of the propagation container and soil shaken off and packed and sent away. Can I ask if you smoke tobacco and if so that’s a no no for plant roots with nicotine on your fingers?

I vape but I wear gloves when I mess with dirt. I had 2 little ones, mom dropped one. The 2nd one was always a little leaned over and it leaned over a little further and I leaned it back up and then it died. The 3rd one is gonna stay in this liner pot until it breaks through lol. I also bought a big one off eBay and they shipped it bare root and it didn't last long at all, maybe 3 days but he did refund me for it.

From my experience with them they are pretty tough, but yes definitely it would not like being pushed back up and the roots broken in the process. The one mum dropped might have dried a little and then possibly overwatered in its recovery process.

Oh no she DROP dropped it. The pot shattered and that was it. I was in the middle of moving in and she wanted to put them in the window. I've still got one though and that's all that matters.

I have $3 and a Starbucks coffee gift card with $6 left on it. How many will that get me?

Maybe they won't die on me if I grow them from seed. I've bought 3 pots with 4 each in 2 sizes and killed every damn one when I separated them. Except one I gave to an employee and her sister cut it to the soil with scissors during a temper tantrum. Like I don't care if she is 6 years old, that's like a $50 plant so I hope she got spanked.

We here at the John and Sancho East Mississippi Palm Conservatorium will graciously accept any and all donations of anything except cats. We're full up on cats at the moment. i don't think they'd do too well in shipping anyway, and it's probably illegal.

Have you shipped to the US before? Is it a big pain in the butt now?

Yes I do ship cats to the us for free, but only to a good home, I throw in free palm seeds as well to the US, no cats have been shipped before, and any palm seeds that have been shipped have been free to a good home in the US.

I can only take cats on a cat exchange program. For every cat you send me, I have to send you 5. It's a new government policy, it's beyond my control.

I do have to warn you though - when you tell me the seeds are ready, I'm going to ask "So uhh what else you got laying around?" It's not that I'm a mooch, it's just been my lifelong dream to have some Happypalms memorabilia.

You bet there is a lot that won’t grow, MAPU, crytostachys renda,  lots of licuala varieties a lot of calytrocalyx varieties , certain pinanga varieties heaps of stuff that grows in Borneo, Papua New Guinea. The amount of palms I have killed trying to find what will grow and what won’t grow is endless. Then there are varieties that will live but never look good suffering and lingering wasting my time and energy trying to grow them half decently, spending five years of time on them only have them die in the end. Then there are palms from cool cold environments that won’t take my summer, the list is endless but you gotta try. But when you do try you find absolute gems of palms unthought of growing in my climate and get some real beautiful palms.

Happyalms  memorabilia now that’s a great idea why didn’t I think of that hats T-shirts stickers watering cans cat litter trays now you talking my kind of marketing! In for a penny in for a pound!

Lemme make sure no more are sick before I box them up. There's some kind of virus going around here that's the feline equivalent of parvo and we lost 5 in a week. I swear I'm innocent, even though all the carpet that I just scrubbed and scraped has fresh turds, and even though they keep chewing my Filifera.

Argh we don’t need any bugs down under. Hold off until the cat pandemic gets under control, but after that send em on down under. This way it will give me time to box up a few happypalms promo gifts for you!

Got this plant from floribunda and have noticed the last few months another palm is emerging.

could it be another Lytocaryum weddellianum? I am assuming yes, as it is emerging in my weddellianum I received but posting here to see if anyone can tell.

No it’s not a lytocarum. Possibly archontophoenix but it could be anything if it come from floribunda. Transfer it from the container and keep a close eye on it you never know your luck!

I'll crack a hole in the glacier before I plant them...

I think this one is ready for a repotting. Starting to get some yellow, pushing itself out of the 4" pot. I hope it's not dying on me. It's been in the corner since I was afraid it'd get sunburned by my grow bulb and it kinda grew past the bulb. Bottom of the pot to the tallest frond is just about 3 feet.

Looks good to me John there quite tough and very forgiving. You got yourself one nice little palm. You should rest a few of your palms in a small greenhouse during summer, then back indoors before it gets to cold in autumn.

The yellowing concerns me. And it's got a dead old frond I need to snip off, too. Maybe it's a change in the climate since the air conditioner in the house broke? Maybe it wants just a smidge of some slow release fertilizer or some fish juice? Maybe it's upset that there's a whole thread about these palms and I haven't taken a single picture of this one since the day I bought it?

It left a puddle where I set up there for the photo. It needs to dry out and I hope I didn't kill it.

Fish juice is fine a bit smelly indoors but works great. Also they like to dry out a little in between watering or the top inch of soil is a good dry test for when to water.

Yes Richard i agree, just a stunning plant and I've put my fair share in the ground.

I can't believe people plant Robellini when you have this beautiful substitute.

That’s another beautiful palm there. Exactly why would you go for a spiky robellini when you have a lytocarum I think the old name put a lot of people off them back in the day being called syagrus. But there one of my favourites that’s for sure!
