I think 4-5 a year here in coastal San Diego is pretty normal for both H. forsteriana & belmoreana.

I have had good results with howea since it is in near total shade.  Old fronds last a long time and new growth occurs year-round.  A real beauty  :P

I'm with Bret. About 4-6 a year. I was told by Jim Wright who has some old 30' tall ones that when its warm, you almost can't overwater them. But stop almost entirely when cold/cool. (Coastal S. D.)

If I leave the water on a real long time, I can see noticeable spear growth from the street over the next few days.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

They grow pretty quickly here... 4 - 6 fronds a year in San Diego, CA. I've had 2 foot gallon-sized plants grow to more than 13 feet (not trunk) tall within 4 or 5 years...with lots of water.

in my city 2 / 3 leaves in 1 year

Mine are struggling here but I'm determined. About 2-3 new leaves a year (plants about 2-3 feet tall).

I've never counted leaves per year, but I took this picture a couple years back of two of mine both with double spears at same time. Surely a palm that produces double spears would produce more leaves than you people are talking about? Interesing, but I doubt I'll ever bother counting them for a year!

Alex you have my dream garden....palms and hydrangeas. Your hydrangeas are magnificent and I envy you so very very much.

Now to stop Troy getting an attack of lemon lips.....my howeas get about 3 new leaves a year. There's some lovely big ones not far from here and if I didnt have those to inspire me I think I would have given up on kentias ages ago.

Troy, Bill and Brett are right on with 4 or so. The cool thing about kentias is how long they hold good fronds. Great canopy palm. Your coming soon right?

Hi Troy,

So far I get 3 leaves but I still hope for more sometime

Doesn't matter if Belmo or Forsty, shade or full sun. Only my potted one doesn't even make 2 p.a. but she looks best and holds 8-9 leaves.

I guess your question is answered already. As it looks by now even Kentias require some heat to grow fast if they are watered well. Pity, that there ain't no fast growing palm for cool climates yet :rage:

What I don't understand about this beautiful palm is that even tall specimen still seem to get burned leaves. Look at Benz Kentias which are a good example that they even get burned down south. I don't understand why 2 spears are an indication of fast growth, though.

Here's a photo of some very old, tall Howea fosteriana beauties in Hillcrest, San Diego, CA. I think they may be more than 50 feet/15 meters tall.

My Forsty (best add that now to the lingo thread) grew no more than three at my old place Troy, it will depend on the light in my opinion. My old girl, I miss her too, she got weak light and she mostly just sat around and played 500 all day with bangalow palms.

One to three leaves per year here in cool SF. The plants do increase slowly the number of leaves in the crown and become more full looking. See you in a few weeks, Troy!

URK!

Wait a minute!

Hmm. For what it's worth, Howeas for me put out a couple three leaves a year, till they get to trunking size, then, KA-BOOM! 8-10 OR MORE.

Ahem. Too tired to scream.

But, you know.

What's 500?

Hi Dave, here's how it's described in Wikipedia.I used to play all the time and the games would go for ages. It's how I saw my Kentia chilling out with the nearby Archo cunninghams.

"500, Five Hundred, is a trick-taking card game devised in America shortly before 1900 and promoted by the United States Playing Card Company, who copyrighted and marketed the rules in 1904".

My tallest one (7 feet of trunk) put out three leaves between March 2010 and today. So I'd guess five to six leaves per year. All my others are variable (eleven of them) between two and four leaves per year.

Wow - thats a huge Bump from Dec 2007 ! :D

Anyway my largest Kentia that is just about trunking is now making 4 fronds a year . The smaller one is only good for 2 / year but its in a shady location .

San diego with its mild winter one would expect 2-3 more fronds a year .

Most likely larger ones with tall trunks and lots of water(a necessity for them to grow fast) may grow several more fronds a year here in our water-starved climate in San Diego.
