yes, this would be the only option with a chance of success

Hi all, thanks for submitting your inquiry, because I found this thread in the pursuit of shopping & planting the same "Eden-like Palms" and associated other trees and plants at my new location in SE Bulgaria, specifically Sandanski-Petrich at the foot of the Belasica (Belasitsa) Mountains in the Strumeshnitsa Valley, 5 minutes north of Greece border near Kulata.

My best advice, after reading your post and with 22 years of experience, is to select and purchase at least 1.5-2 meter high, SELF CLEANING palms; my all time favorite for your zone is #1 below, which has green trunks and are cold tolerant to -3.33 C (26 F).

#1 King Alexander (Archontophoenix alexandrae), self cleaning, green trunk, from Australia. Buy as many as your wallet can afford at the same time, as large as possible, which means rent a truck along with other selected items.

I am currently searching WHERE* to buy these as well.... It's critical to plant in spring to establish deep roots and heavily mulch to prepare for winter, preferably in a SE/S/SW location that is also sheltered from high winds to avoid wind chill death to fronds even though the temperature is 0-10 C.

Veitchia merrilli "Manila," yes from the Philippines
"Adonidia Palm" Adonidia merrillii
Christmas Palm
Pygmy Date Palm

I do NOT recommend at all Washingtonia or Queen since they need laborers to remove the fronds, and this can be potentially hazardous and expensive when they exceed 3m high. If you do not remove the dead fronds, they are very unsightly and detract from the purpose of having a large green leaf palm-centered garden in the first place.

* I'm searching for a source that can truck my selected species in from Turkey, Greece, etc.

Ciao,

Correction: SW Bulgaria.

Addition: In my new location, I am looking to import 3-5 large Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera), which probably is not possible, so I will settle for the "Cretan Date Palm" (Phoenix theophrasti), native to the eastern Mediterranean, including southern Greece and Turkey. Looking for sources.

p.s. Looks like we cannot edit our comments :(

So i really want to turn my garden into a very green garden with palm trees and other palm like plants but i fear that all my money will go to waste if the plants end up dying so im asking for some help as to the options of plants i can plant. So here are the averages but the past years the lowest it got is probably -3 here. There is a nursery with queen palms very close to my but they dont look very healthy but they did survive the last 4 winters.Furthermore my garden is somewhat protected as you can see in the image and is facing the south east.I dont want to plant the casual canarians and filiferas as they are way too common and dont give me that tropical feel.im thiking about washingtonia robustas, queen palms or even try the king palms but i need some help about placement and protection i will add some images so you can help meimage.png.cdcd255735098db47a92c6807e38eded.png

Update the last couple of months I did in fact buy my first palms a queen, a kentia and some other little ones and I’ve kept them in pots because I decided I’m going to be bringing them inside in the harsh winter days as long as they fit there I’m quite excited and thinking of adding some king palms maybe some Adonidia palms (impossible so find in Europe for a good price) to my collection so here are some pictures I took

Ciao,

thanks for the advice there is a nursery called the flower company that has mature king palms that is close to where i live and even mature single trunk kentias i decided im going to keep all my palms in pots so that they grow slower and so that they can come indoors for the freezes since planting them feels way too risky to me i bought a 3 meter queen a multi trunk kentia and i really want to buy a lot of king palms since i want the closest i can get to a coconut tree that i can maintain decently i also really want to find adonidia palms though it has been impossible to find any even in the whole of greece
