DFW Washingtonia - The Few The Proud

Hi!

I had four really nice sized filiferas in my yard that froze in 2021. I planted them from 5 gal pots in 2008 and they survived 13 years unprotected. Here’s a pic of a survivor I spotted in Plano. Wish mine had survived :(

Excellent find! I think I’ve seen this one before actually but totally forgot about it

Found another one a few blocks south of forest lane. Looks pretty good at the moment. Also it gets protected in winter it looks like so could have a chance at semi long term survival

Rosa's Cafe in Coppell Texas. Gets trunk wrapped in winter which probably helps a bit.

I have seen the one at Rosa’s, passing by on 121.  There used to be numerous large filiferas around DFW, but between the freezes of 2011 and 2021 they are pretty much wiped out. Glad you found a few more survivors. The palmettos have been amazingly hardy, however.

Phoenix canariensis in Plano that survived the deep freeze of 2021. Been there a long time and keeps coming back.

Just checked on the volunteer filifera that's been growing below the Woodall rogers freeway across from the aquarium, and it is sure getting thick. Pictures don't do it justice. Looks like it's about to start putting on some vertical growth, but trunk is already taller than I am.

Just hoping they don't remove it, because the trunk is right up against the fence and will probably break it if it gets any thicker

Not the best pic, but the one remaining Washingtonia hybrid at Hooters in downtown Dallas has fully recovered after being defoliated in late February by temps in the low teens. There's a filifera a block away that escaped unscathed.

Used to be part of a mass planting, although 2021 took out about half, and then 2022, and 2024 took out the remaining weak ones.

Thank you Tony for showing us some really beautiful palms in the DFW area. Filiferas cold hardiness is so underrated.  It's just the right and best palm along with some Sabals , Trachies and Butias in zone 8 hands down.

Unfortunately this one is gone. Drove by just now trying to get a picture and was shocked to discover it had been cut down. Can’t imagine this winter Killed it so must have been new owners of house or something.

What a waste… one of the tallest ones here.
