what the hell... did they cut all the way to the core...?

It appears so, I was in total shock when I first saw it. I've seen some pretty bad prune jobs down here, but this one may very well be the worst I have ever seen.

The same palmettos in February 2024...

Holy crap - that is sickening. I hate to see this. These landscaping companies really need to be educated on proper pruning for palms, this happens too often in too many places.

@NC_Palms What do you know about these?

They’ve been there as long as I remember. There’s a few wild ones growing behind the businesses where it’s forested.

I was driving today and I saw a naturalized butia growing on the side of the road in Washington, NC. I couldn’t stop for a pick but maybe i’ll try to find it on google maps. Not the first butia i’ve seen in the area thought.

A nice patch of volunteer palmettos i've been watching for some time.  I'm assuming they came from the transplants at the condo, and have since matured, and dropped their own seeds all over the place.  Including this drainage ditch across the street.
I have scored some nice seedlings from this area in the past.  Oak Island, NC

@PAPalmtreesWow thanks for sharing the palms in Holden!

@NC-Key-BarThere is most likely a native population on Oak Island too.

Very likely. Palmetto seeds will readily sprout all over the place here. And minors are dense in the woods around. Once they begin seeding, they can become the dominant species.

The other day me and my dad Went to Carolina Palm Beach Nursery here in north Carolina and They had amazing prices everything was dirt cheap They were selling big sable palmettos for 185 a piece. I got a sable miner for 30 bucks also

I had a nice visit to JLBG today.  They have their Fall open house next weekend.  Very worth a visit if you're able to (Raleigh, NC).
I see something new every time I go.  And buy something new as well!

Trying to get more online coverage of palms along the Crystal Coast. Nothing fancy, but here's a group of palmettos with hundreds upon hundreds of seeds from this morning while I was going for a walk...

Then, we have another horrible prune job on a palmetto in Cedar Point. A landscaper has removed basically all of the boot jacks on this palm. Saw several Butia in the immediate area with the same thing going on. It looks awful!

Beautiful part of North Carolina that’s for sure. The Black River further south (especially near Ivanhoe in Sampson County) is also another nice spot to check out on Street View. In that area exists bald cypress that are over 2500 years old.

Just checked it out so beautiful it kinda reminds me of the Great Dismal Swamp This spring I will be planting some bald Cypress in a swampy area on our property
