Dypsis minuta flowering, pollinator

Recommended Posts

I purchased this little minuta a couple of weeks ago. It was in flower with a few seeds. And a v couple of other flower spikes now the ready to pollinate. I checked them today and found a tiny little insect crawling on the flowers, so hopefully with fingers crossed this little bug helps in pollination. I took the two I have in flower out of the greenhouse to place into a more natural setting to give the insects more of chance go do there thing with plants, rather than be in a semi protected environment. I certainly hope it works.

Cool! Those look like good seeds in the last picture.

Has this been slow for you? I just germinated Dypsis confusa. Slow seedlings.

Such a neat little palm. I’ve tried several times to grow this one but while they arrive in pristine condition they decline and die in a few weeks and I don’t know why, Could you and anyone else advise me on cultivation tips?

My 6-7 month summers are hot (35-40C), often rainy and humid (80-100%). Lows during summer are 21 to 30C.  Our winter is our dry season but none of my minutas lived long enough to take on winter. January average temps are 75/55 but the past few years occasional cold fronts dropped lows to 5C.

Question: Is Dypsis minuta one of the cool-loving cloud forest palms like many species of Chamaedorea?

Are 6 to 7 months of swelter more than this palm can stand?

I would really like to succeed with this species. Any tips and guidance greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Meg

They are a lovely little palm. Last Monday we just had a 40 degree Celsius day with hot dry unbearable heat, the two I have survived well but that’s in a garden setting with lots of moisture around from watering and shade so heat  doesn’t seem to worry them but definitely humidity they like. As for cold lows of 2 degrees Celsius in a greenhouse so some what cool tolerant. Semi bright shade  they like or 70% shade cloth. I would suggest a bush house style of setting for your new minuta. 6 to 7 months of heat exposure I would be trying to get as much humidity as I can get. Good luck in creating your environment.

It is a slow palm to grow. I certainly hope the seeds ripen iam looking forward to growing some more of this palm to plant in the garden. I got a heap of confusa seedlings now and they seem to be slow as well.
