What’s the growth rate of these like?

Slugs like chinensis?  Or rockets like nitida?

Posted

A bit faster than Chinensis. I have a small one that has been in the ground about a year and seems to be growing well. My friend has one that is  much taller than my Chinensis and both are the same age. I’m hoping my Australis passes up my Chinensis . It took 23 years for the Chinensis to go from a 10” pot size to just forming trunk in the ground. Harry

They definitely grew faster than chinensis back in Oregon. Very hardy too, seems to be on par with nitida or at least very close.

Mine’s 20 years old from seedling. Fast grower for my coolish climate.

Jim - would you take a pic of the trunk for me near a shovel or a bucket or something for scale?

Whoa baby....

What's the soil like there in that spot?  Are you watering the hell out of it?

Soil here is fast draining fertile loam to about two feet down, then a mixture of mostly yellow clay. The palm is kept watered by automatic sprinklers and I’ll give it a bit extra by hose in unusually hot weather.

This is my baby L. Australis, one year in ground from 5gallon nursery pot. It had been forgotten in the back of a nursery and rebounded immediately after I planted it. Harry
