My house plant needs help

Hi Everyone,

I have had this plant since 2018, it has lived in other countries fine and although I am in Barcelona over a year now, but I don’t think it likes its spot here.

The plant’s been always happy but recently the leaves are drying quickly and the soil has white damp looking stuff on it.
I am not sure what this plant is called and any help to make it look happy again is gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

It looks like you’re palm is lacking humidity by the large glass window with radiant heat  it  is difficult to tell I can’t see the soil that well that you mention that could be a fungus or mycelium

Have you kept it in that pot for the past 6 years? Never repotted it? What is it planted in? Do you ever fertilize it?

1. I suggest you repot it in a new bigger pot. Make sure the pot has plenty of drain holes. Never let the plant sit in a tray of stagnant water. Throw out the old potting soil. Check the roots of your palm. Healthy roots are white, rotting roots are black/brown. Show us photos of the roots. Also, photos of the whole palm will help us. I can't tell what species it is. Trim off all dead foliage - brown, not green. You may need to treat the palm with hydrogen peroxide, insecticide and/or fungicides.

2. Repot with very coarse, loose soil mix. I use 1/3 premium garden soil (Kellogg brand in the US). If Miracle Gro brand soils are sold in your country, avoid them at all cost. They are black muck that will promote root rot when wet, plus the MG company monopolizes soil sales by squeezing out superior products. Also avoid cheap black discount store houseplant soil.

3. To my chosen garden soil, I add 1/3 reconstituted coco coir and 1/3 perlite. You may not have access to all these things but you should be able to find substitutes. PTers from Europe can help you with choices.

4. Do not overwater your palm. More palms die from overwatering than under watering because people think the answer to any issue is throwing water at their plant victim. After watering, discard leftovers.

5. Do not fertilize for at least 3 months after repotting. Throwing fertilizer at a palm is not always (and seldom is) the best answer to an issue. Use a time release pelletized quality fertilizer with minor elements formulated for palms so as not to burn their roots. Avoid the blue granular one-hit wonder houseplant fertilizer that can kill the roots and the palm with a single dose.

6. If your house is like most northern houses, it is too cold, dry and dark most of the year. Add heat and supplemental light if necessary. Set pot on a tray filled with rocks and water to raise humidity. Now spring is here you may be able to set the pot outdoors in Nature's shade and rain, if you get any in summer.

ha, this made me laugh.  absolute truth though💯. Miracle Grow cactus & succulent mix should be banned from sale. it's a black sponge that never drains or dries out
