Nice find. I am shopping for homes in the San Antonio area right now and I have been wondering about the best places to find palms. Moon Valley was on my radar, so I will have to check them out once I get moved in.

Palm buddha has the largest number of different palms .

Lowes in Atascocita has bunch of palms on clearance.  Some Washingtonia in 7 gallon for $30, older fronds are brown but each have 3 or 4 green fronds still.  Really nice 15 gallon Chamaerops $80 and small Queens for $10.  I'm a sucker and couldn't resist a $10 palm.

@Xenon  Which Lowes is this - Katy?

Those Dioons will go on clearance I bet.  Nobody is going to want to pay that money for a "Sago Palm".😜

So far!  Hopefully they'll send some my way, not that I have any budget left for them.

I was at ANOTHER Lowe's today and I actually took a pic of the Bizzy they had.  I have never seen one so purple.  The photo doesn't do it justice.

The purple fades with maturity, but still best to start with the most purple you can get to get the best blue (and cold hardiness?) in the future

We don’t get any cool palms at big box stores in Georgia :(

All I've seen at the local Lowe's are Majesty and Cat palms. I'm jealous of the Bizzies and bottle palms.

I'm here in Atascocita visiting my sister for the holiday and stopped by the Lowe's and found this deal - 7-gal Bottle Palm marked down to $29.99!  Last of the clearance palms that I could see but worth the trip.  It ended up being cheaper than the 7-gal Queen that I bought in the fall and almost as tall.  :)

Lowe’s finally got a new shipment in this week. Some bottle palms, queens and finally Sylvester palms. Unfortunately theyre 200 dollars for 15 gallon or so, was hoping to find some of the smaller 25 dollar ones like they had up in Myrtle beach in February

@Xenon that's more like what I would expect to pay for a Butia.  My local HomeDepot here in Summerwood is a pretty small store, so I'm not expecting any to show up.  May be worth a drive over.

That's a great deal, those were really nice palms.  I'm headed over there today for some planting supplies, fingers crossed they've got some more good things on clearance.

It is.  I planted it closer to the house than I normally would, but from my limited winter experience here it seems the cold winds hit the front of the house so this should provide some protection.  It is also facing east so gets first day sun, and south so gets full sun from sun up until mid afternoon.

😔 the most we have at our lowes are Majesty Neantha Bella Cat and an occasional pygmy date palm. There was a store 2 hours from here I saw that sold christmas and I think they had a bottle palm. A local nursery had a queen palm too

They are pushing the coconuts in our local big box. Even good sized ones and not just the small seedlings. They also had bittles, spindles, adonidias, queens, pygmy dates, foxtails, and old man palm, and bismarks.  No archontophoenix, chrysalidocarpus lutescens, florida natives, or really odd stuff but a decent selction. There should be a few more freeze tolerant types, but no one wants them here or they have issues in summer.  These tend to yellow out a bit in winter, but not as bad as California can be and its not as noticable.

If it's Archontophoenix cunninghamiana you put it in the best spot.  Smaller palms can't handle afternoon sun and it doesn't look like you have much shade.  Alexandrae and other species are more sun tolerant but less freeze tolerant.  I'm not sure my alexanders are coming back so I picked up a 5-gal cunninghamiana from HGC yesterday and planted it on the east side of the house today!

That's where it came from, so I'm glad I managed to put it in the right spot.  I wasn't sure about the sun tolerance, but I figured it would still get enough sun and protecting from afternoon sun wouldn't hurt.  I keep reading about how many full sun plants here still need a bit of that afternoon protection.  The Sabals I have will go in full sun though, I'm counting on them to eventually give me some shade.

Lowes in Seattle area finally got some early shipment of the usual suspects: Trachys and Chamaerops.  PXL_20240404_160545751.thumb.jpg.1b9af2666fec6b805ddee8f5d21e4a60.jpg

Saw this Butia Odorata at Lowe's for 32 dollars. Couldn't resist . I don't know where I'm going to plant it but I'll figure it out. Perfect palm for our climate here in San Antonio.

The problem with these is they're usually super stretched out.  If you acclimate them to full sun the new fronds end up being 5-6' tall instead of 10'.  I have one with 3 years growth that still isn't as tall as the day I got it.

I had the same thing happened to my Washies . When I purchased them they all had long petioles but as time went by the new growth was a lot shorter .

That's exactly what Harry's Palms was talking about way upthread, greenhouse grown and stretched out. I remember when 3 gallon Butias were a staple of the big box store, for under $20. I planted one at the family commercial property and my dad ran it over with the riding mower, but it somehow lived and put up some new growth, and then my brother started hitting it with the riding mower until it died. All along the northern Gulf Coast they sell Foxtails, I can't imagine why. People buy them and they die even in the best winter. But the store has a return policy, so savvy shoppers will make use of it. Seems like a giant waste of time and resources.

Is it so hard to send a few small Butias my way!  The cheapest I can get a Butia for here is $160 for not that big a palm.  If I want a non hardy palm its no issue.  I find the big box here stock so many tropicals, and I mean a lot of different tropicals that can survive a mild winter here, but anything below 30F and we may have issues.

My Lowe’s location has consistently had windmills, med fans, and livistona chinensis in stock this spring. Definitely a good thing to see a hardier selection here. Of course for every windmill there’s like 2 queens and a bottle palm lol

Still looking for a Lowes that carries Bismarkias. I can only find Mexican fans, pindos, Chinese fans, Med fans, sagos, queens, bottles, spindles and date palms. Still a decent selection but I already have all these palms lol!

Bottles and spindles survive in HHI?

No, these stores are selling palms that are definitely not hardy in the local area. Bottles can be bought in several sizes at the Walmart I visited today in Tallahassee, for example. The most charitable possible explanation is that they are intended to be permanent pot dwellers that get brought inside for winter.
