I picked up a couple of these from Floribunda a year or two ago and they are both growing well in pots. They haven’t been bothered by chill or heat or much of anything so far although they have lived under 60% shade cloth the whole time I’ve had them. I’m thinking I’d like to put at least one of these in the ground this spring but info on these is a little scarce. Does anyone know how these do in Florida? How much sun can they take?

I love them - good work. I grew a bunch of 1 gal from seed in 2021/22. Even though I'd stashed them deep in my jungle, Hurricane Ian's near-cat 5 winds managed to fatally damage them. They started out looking normal but a few days to several weeks they all shriveled and died from windburn. So, if (God forbid) a major hurricane targets you put these beauties into the garage or house.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

Your post inspired me to move my 3, they’ve hung in there when the semi shade became full sun and no rain for 4 weeks, moved to filtered light and deeper soil in an area I actually water.

They say thanks for the post!

I agree, such a neat little palm and the dark tomentum on the trunk is so distinct. The leaflets do seem to have an unusually  small connection to the rachis, especially for the larger wedge shape leaflet. So it makes sense that wind could be an issue for these.

I wonder if I could get away with part day sun here in Florida, did yours have a noticeable bad reaction to being in full sun?

I remembered I had taken a picture of one at Leu Gardens but it took me forever to find it. I think it was at least partially shaded.

The sunniest one was yellowing a bit but that was maybe the dry.  Full sun for me is rarely over 85 and humid.

Here are mine in their new spots, the current condition of them reflects an extreme and sudden increase in light and chronic underwatering.  Not too bad considering, I hope they settle in quickly.

EDIT Looks like the forum flipped the center one…

Not bad at all! They look to be similar in size to the ones I have.
To play it safe I think I will have to plan my spot to always at least have afternoon cover.

Thought I’d add a few photos to this topic, I’ve only one in the garden and it’s finally starting to fill out as it matures. Has some serious root competition, but making a go of it. Nice color, interesting leaves, and takes up little space.
