For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

FINALLY getting rain. Half an inch so far. I'll take it, but I hope it delivers more before this event is over.  According the graphic posted above, my location had been in the moderate drought category.

Sudden flip here on the SE Piedmont. Now calling for a wet week. Tuesday I bought a couple sprinkler heads and gave 20-minutes to a 1/4 acre. Wednesday morning, another 25-minutes. Last night it rained.

Maybe if I had only waxed the car and left it outside. . . .

The next map will look different in portions of west central Florida.  Tampa's airport is looking at a top 10 driest Septembers on record since 1890.

Well, it happened.  2025 takes top honors for turning Tampa into Tempe.

For anyone interested:

The full PDF version of the NWS report for the TBO office is attached as well.  Just goes to show you why this thread was started.  This has been quite a stretch for the Tampa area.  While @HudsonBill drowns, saguaro may become viable on Davis Island.

Over here, near the coastal areas, if it wasn’t for September, it would be a very, very bad year.   We made up some ground.   Still have hopes for October, as it’s our 3rd rainiest month, but hurricane season is fading fast.

See, I'm not a liar.  Here's a not so bold prediction for Tampa, October will bring more rain than September for the first time EVER.

You won't catch me accusing you of lying.  If anyone did think you were being hyperbolic about how dry it has been the last three years, this should put that to rest. Interesting prediction - let's see how it holds up after we come off our sugar highs from Halloween. :)

Rainy season started in late June. Dry season started in July. We are currently ~15" down on rainfall. "Official" calendar says dry season starts Oct. 15. We have 10 days left. Rain falls all over the State except parts of Cape Coral and Fort Myers. The last time we had a summer like this (2021?) it was cloudy, dreary, rainy the following winter. We went 90+ days with almost no sunlight and I'm expecting the same this winter. Nature always erases imbalances. Yesterday it rained for 20-30 seconds and that's all she wrote. I know because our cat got hit by a couple drops and bolted indoors.

I have felt that this pattern has been crap for a while and I'm somewhat satisfied I'm not the only one. I'm starting to get apprehensive for winter also.  Prep starts around thanksgiving like always, but this year will have more initial steps so I'm not scrambling.

Got a very unexpected .50" of rain which brings my October total to .83".  That surpasses September by .13" so as predicted, October 2025 has brought more rain than September.

October is normally our driest month.

It’s amazing in the difference between the east and west coasts. Our summer was a mixed bag. We had drought conditions with some heavy rain days mixed in.  We have been quite wet the last week. Last night it rained so much that my pool filled by about 10”. It hit the deck level so there could have been more and just overflowed. It’s been raining all day today and it’s supposed to continue until tomorrow. After that, it looks like dry weather for a while.

Posted

Currently dry, mid-50's. One storm last week helped the plants but didn't put much in the reservoir.

Winter prediction is for warmer and drier than average. Hopefully we get rain in the watershed and refill the lake.

We need an eye roll of solidarity reaction button lol. These have been off all year, the climate on the West Coast is savannah and dry forest, the "rainy season" is just a bit wetter than the dry season and not a true rainy season along the west coast. Not the same as east or south of Naples at all.

I've gotten more rain at my house in Oct so far than Aug. And this is without the aid of a tropical storm or hurricane passing over.

It has rained in my garden 3 times since September 1.  With La Nina expected this winter, the local drought conditions by spring could be the worst on record.

Over here, we went from “critical super-duper drought” all the way over to “no drought” in about a month, demonstrating once again, that the majority of the year’s precipitation often falls in a couple of quick big batches.

Posted

This map is greatly under stating the situation locally.  Three rainfalls in nearly 2 months with above normal temps should have us in moderate drought territory.  No worries though, it's coming soon enough.  Soon we'll have breezy weather which exacerbates bad to worse.

A crazy dump of 6.5 inches of rain in just a couple hours last night here in Merritt Island.  Almost 17 inches of rain for October so far. Hitting our average of 52 or so inches per year seemed impossible last month but now we are in range to get there. As usual I just wish it didn’t show up all at once.

We got over 4" last night in Altamonte Springs. That's the most single day rain we got this summer though its fall now.  I see NW of Orlando, Eustis got 19" and Mt. Dora over 17"...last night!

0" rain here last night in case anyone was wondering.  There was no expectation other than that.  A stiff breeze made sure that the dry conditions were extra crispy.

We got a trace here yesterday - literally got hit by three total raindrops while I was weeding.  Today, we have gotten a little less than a tenth of an inch so far.  Any is better than none, but when they tell you to expect T-storms and they fizzle out ...   🤷‍♂️

Counting what we got today, we're at roughly 1.1 inches of rain for the month.  That puts us at about a third of normal.

The drought map flipped for the end of the year.  We got thrashed by crazy rain over here last night, with some spots getting 5+ inches between about 11pm and 2am.   I’m not sure how much fell at the house, but it was around that much, enough to flood everything.  Lightening was crazy too.  Lost power for a little while.  Still behind for the year, but caught up a lot the past 2 months.

3+ weeks no rain at all.  Dry windy conditions mean my manual rainbird sprinkler has been busy.  Anything planted within 2 years gets extra as well as all jungle palms.  The windy days dry things out fast at 85F.  What is happening with weather inconsistency?  Seems like 4 of the last 5 years or so have been abnormally dry here.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??
