hello palm lovers... Today I have a dilemma spinning in my head... Do you think it is possible for a beccariophoenix alfredii to be able to give it, through substances in the soil, an orange coloration of the leaf stems like the cocos nucifera of the orange cultivar? obviously the alfredii is green like a green coconut, but I wonder if it is possible through substances in the soil to make the alfredii palm orange like an orange coconut?

Not as orange but they do have nice color that can remind one of the real deal. For us in Mediterranean climates we just have to use imagination. Looks pretty nice to me.

I'm sorry. It's not feasible. 

 

Just because two palm species have physical similarities doesn’t necessarily mean they are genetically capable of hybridizing. To my knowledge no one has successfully hybridized a coconut palm with another palm species. Cocos is a monotypical genus for a reason.

Get a Jubaeopsis if that's the look you're going for

How would you do this, other than applying orange paint?  LOL.  The only other possibility is discovering a seedling mutant with this characteristic and selectively breeding it.

Mine is rather yellow I would say. At least the rachis.

This. And you'll get a two for one.

 

For hybridizing it's all about chromosomes. If they have the same numbers of chromosomes between the two species then a cross is a possibility. 

 

For the coloring you desire you would have to do years of selective breeding- like the Japanese do with Koi.

The easy out is to look for a colorful Jubaeopsis. Even then, the coloring is variable from specimen to specimen. My jubaeopsis is a yellow color on the petioles. Some are orange, some are green. Leaf-wise it's one of the closest things you can grow if you can't crow coconuts.

thanks guys you are legendary and well informed as always ... yes I have a coconut in a pot but with a green stalk, because the orange coconut plants are not found in Europe ... and therefore I was looking for an alternative ....

 

thinking about it, a hybrid between jubaeopsis caffra x syagrus would be nice

you would get something really nice and very similar to coconut...

but it seems strange to me the stem too wide and thick ... in your opinion is a beccariophoenix??

maybe it grew in the greenhouse and thickened the stem much more than normal? it also seems to me an old plant in that small vase for years ...

Yes, that is a Beccariophoenix.

I did. It didn't make it.  I then opted for the alfredii which is growing nicely.

@GottmitAlexdidn't make it because of the cold? or for other reasons? so it's not that strong?

Fenestralis' are less cold hardy than Alfie's and madagascariensis.

And more finicky with requirements. They love to have humidity.  They are a tough grow in my region.

Someone at that nursery was way too aggressive with the pruning shears and should have used that time to upsize it to a 20g before it got so root bound. Regardless I'm sure it will end up doing just fine, just needs to be planted out ASAP. She's begging for a home!
