You could probably leave it outside and just bring it inside for frosts they do pretty well outside here in the winter however they don't need to be brought indoors for frosts, since it's in the ground and it doesn't get cold enough.

It's been in the same corner in my apartment for over 2 years now. My little balcony is cluttered with palms (see my Patio Squad thread in Palms In Pots subforum, I'd have to kill stuff to make room for it outdoors.)

 

Anyway, tonight's update is my Aloe Dorothea. Finally showing some dark reds indoors. Dunno if this counts as cheating, but I read they show more colors when stressed, so I've left a grow light on it for 15+ hours a day, haven't watered it in 2 months, and showed it my credit score. I'd turn red too.

Can I get the current height on your Areca?
And do you think it will grow much taller over the years, or stay relatively short?

I recently planted one of these in a HIGHLY protected spot (near the house, with option to cover during a freeze). I'm curious how tall it might get in my area. There's a patio cover well above it, but am thinking it *probably* won't ever get that tall here in SoCal... but would love to confirm.

Thanks @iDesign! Current height is about 8 feet to the tip of the spear. 
 

I don’t know how much taller it will get. I have tried a few others without this one’s success. The raised planter and north exposure seem to help this area really thrive. This plant was also relatively huge when I got it from Floribunda. Good luck and let us know.

Here's a photo of a chambeyronia macrocarpa var hookeri from Kew. Hopefully I can find one for sale one day so it can be tried outside.

after a very cold week around Christmas and another two week-long cold wave during the second half of January (temps between 50-64F/10-18C) I am surprised

to see my last fall planted out...

P. hillebrandii completely unharmed,...

...even pushing a new spear..

This one I am happy about, too...

Planted out at the same time - Clinostigma savoryanum - ...

...being 'active' as well - pushing a new spear, too. 

This one here is the only one that grows happily only during our cooler and drier winter months -

...now seven or eight years old from seed - Jubea chilensis. (At the moment no plans to plant out - it still looks to vulnerable 

to me. I guess I give it another ten years...😅)

I bought a couple Dypsis moroansetra last year pretty much for the red emergent leaf. I had no idea the leaf bases would be this colorful!

Looking down on one of my Licuala mattanensis “mapu”

I am sneaking in a non palm that drew my attention momentarily from the palms nearby. Freycinetia cumingiana, pandanus relative.

Asterogyne martiana with its own red leaf fading but always so symmetric and its corrugated leaves pleasant to touch.

it seems that the first seeds on my seed grown Veitchia joannis are ripening...

...

Getting new palms out of these would be amazing. I have seen flowering Veitchia arecina in the Southeast Botanical Garden on the Okinawa 

main island while the Veitchia joannis species was not in their collection. If it turns out that these seeds are viable, it might the first time 

at all to have this species bred naturally here in Japan.

Lars, your V. joannis looks to be a hybrid. Certainly far from an expert, I’ve been told that Veitchia here in Hawaii are notorious for cross pollinating and some have even suggested getting a true joannis would be extraordinary. There are some older specimens locally in East Hawaii that look like the real deal, with weepy, droopy leaflets, noticeably different than V. arecina. I’ve seen many specimens that have that in-between look including a couple in my garden which were collected as seed from a local garden. 

This is just an observation on my part, and it’s worth is just that.

After the 5 weeks dry here on the rocks, I'll take the wet!

My Queens caught my eye today. Recovery is going well thus far, both have been growing at the very least a noticeable rate.
