Fungus on Cuban Palms base? Is my tree going to die?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Could anyone please help me and let me know if this is ganoderma at the base of one cuban palm.

I have palms around my salt pool and also this particular palm is next to a compost pile that I have removed away now just incase the fungus is coming from the compost pile.

Thanks in Advance!

@StPeteFlo that does look a lot like the Ganoderma photos, though most occur coming out from a section of trunk directly.  It also doesn't have the "standard" outer white ring like in the photos in the links below.

Around this time of year I get random mushrooms that pop up, get to about 6-12" diameter, and then dissolve into mush in a day or two.  It's possible that the piece you show in the photos isn't related to the palm at all.  It seems like it *might* be coming up between the roots and not *from* the roots, so it could just be compost mushrooms.  I'd remove the mushroom-y thing and keep an eye out for other ones popping up in the area.  Take a couple of good photos of the entire palm now, so you can compare it for later.  If the area dries out after the compost was removed and it forms a conk that you can spot growing...or rapid decline of the palm like in the UFL photos...then you can be sure it is Ganoderma Zonatum.  If that's the case you'll need to remove it asap and don't plant another palm in that spot.  But...that's several assumptions about the mushroom-y thing that you found.

Thanks Merlyn. I have taken pictures of the palm and will now keep on eye on it.

@StPeteFlo that's a great looking setup!  The mushrooms look a lot like the ones in your compost pile, it doesn't really look like a Ganoderma conk.  Personally I would not compost palm fronds next to living palms, just to avoid whatever small chance of bacteria/fungal infections spreading around.  I don't know if it's actually a risk, it just seems like it *might* be a risk.  :D
