Mine here in Maricopa AZ ain’t doing too good either.. since it’s been planted it’s shown no signs of life. The spear is still at the same height, all the leafs are starting to die out now.

So sorry for your loss. One of the three I purchased (in the same batch as yours) is likely dying as well. ☠️

What's weird to me though is that your palm had the OUTER fronds turn brown first, with the spear staying green for a while. On mine the INNER fronds are brown (after a nasty heatwave), but the outer fronds are still somewhat green. I'm going to hold out hope that this might mean mine isn't headed for the same fate. :crying:

Here's mine as of today (the one that's likely dying)...

Spear hasn't moved, and everything on the INSIDE is crispy. Outer fronds are oddly still green though. Maybe? 🤔

* The two other old men are happily doing much better than this one.

What happens if you yank that spear?   I imagine it might pull and your last hope might be peroxide and antifungals down the hole.

Just checked and still can't pull the spear (or any of the dead-looking fronds coming out the middle).

Husband restarted hydrogen peroxide treatments when the decline was noticed (on September 7th). We marked the spear and all the brown-looking fronds, but haven't seen any movement in past 5 weeks. Best guess is that it "fried" during an extra-long heatwave we had at that time.

Only glimmer of hope is that the outer fronds are still a very dark green (unlike @xoRudy's where the outer fronds fried first). Hoping it might still make it. Come on lil' guy! :crying:

Mine didn't make it either. It WAS growing during our monsoon season,(pushed 3" of new spear) but once the extreme heat came back,it just gave up. No rot, can't pull the spear, just started drying up in the heat 1 frond at a time.😪

Just sprouted some seeds of this species. Maybe they will do better if grown entirely in Arizona? Time will tell...

Heartbreaking 😪

Hoping my one "golden boy" old man palm will at least make it to represent his fallen AZ brothers. Thank you again for picking my three up for me. So sad to hear yours didn't make it.

As for the one still at Whitfill, if it's still there a year from now it's a confirmed winner! But I'd be REALLY hesitant to pick it up otherwise.

Hopefully the new seedlings will do better for you 🌱

One of my coccothrinax was in the sun when I first planted it and the spear got burned would you cut the burned end off?

I'd wait to see if the spear opens first. You can always trim the tips of an opened frond later without possibly causing additional damage to the spear now.

Just an update on my palm, it looks like it made it through the summer.

The sad ending to one of my three...

I happily still have two palms from that batch, which I'm thrilled about. Been in denial on the third for a full year now, but finally let it go today.

Are any of the other ill-fated 2022 “Florida to Arizona" old men palms still alive? @Rudy yuma,az? @96720? Other?

One of mine is still alive but doesn’t look good it is the slowest growing palm I have ever seen it is working on it’s second frond since I bought it!!!

As you know,I only had 1 and eventually lost it to extreme heat. Still glad we had a chance to give 'em a try. Removed it and replaced with another Coccothrinax I grew myself from seed. No problems with this one; even with 45+ days between 110F - 119F so far this year.:greenthumb:

Awesome! Betting the locally grown ones will do much better. Though one still has to wonder whether these might have survived if not brought over during a cold snap (sitting for who knows long in a cold truck). I agree it was fun to try... and so far I have two possible success stories! Fingers are still tightly crossed though. 🤞

Hang in there buddy!!! Cooler times to come, though it definitely has an "I'd rather be in Florida" look as of today. Thanks for the update. ❤️

Still very small but much easier in the soil than in pot, whether in full sun or semi shade, under warm or hot conditions.20230825_161430.thumb.jpg.7d6e945afb8cb8a00b8b4896cf009f6d.jpg
