I may go ahead and trunk cut, i feel it may be the only way to not only get somewhat of a possible jump start on seeing some growth, but also to see if theres anything left to regrow.

Edit: If i do trunk cut, would i need to keep the sun from hitting the palm? I might be able to build a makeshift tent to keep both rain and sun off of it.

I will hold off on trunk cutting for now, i will be looking into getting fish fertilizer at lowes today. Will also get some compost/manure and try to mix some of that into the surrounding soil.

I don't know anything about trunk cutting, I tried it on a couple of defoliated Bottle palms this May.  It probably helped one of them survive, as the new spear poked up only about 8" above the cut before opening.  Two others died, but they might have died with or without the cut.  I guess you could think of it two ways:

  • If you trunk cut now you open more wounds and remove nutrition-producing fronds.  The benefit may be access to wash out the heart and a shorter distance for any new frond to open up.
  • If you leave it there's no relief of crown rot, and a longer distance for any new frond to grow before opening.  The benefit is that the existing fronds can continue to provide nutrition.

Here is my Pindo with dead spear and 2 of the newest leaves also dead...the spear hasn't pulled yet.  The oldest leaf on the bottom left has some spotting, but others seem "normal" so far.

If i trunk cut and then water with the fish fertilizer, do you think it would still have a chance?

Decided to go ahead with the cut, poured H2O2 in the hole that is not much smaller, it has been fizzing for almost 5 minutes.

I feel like that there isnt much palm left between the hole and its roots. Pretty sure its done. Will probably be dug out tomorrow.

Hmm, never had to trunk cut but I feel like it's always cut all the way past the hole? Maybe there's still some good parts.

Yes, trunk cutting involves cutting past the hole to living tissue. However, this one doesnt even have half a foot of trunk left to cut and there is still a hole. I dont have a saw so im using hand held pruners, very hard to cut at this point because its becoming more dense. I have not dug it up yet because, well, im not sure.

Banrot, Copper Fungicide, and maybe hydrogen peroxide.

Any suggestion is just a guess. Maybe it got bumped, or maybe it got a disease.  But I personally Never had a Butia with spear pull in the summer survive, but I didn't do anything other than try to keep the hole dry and cross my fingers. Cold damage from spear pull is different than what happened here.

Like I said a month ago, summer disease is not likely to recover. They are in active growth. Had it been alive, it would have already pushed threw it. Its DEAD, Sorry. I have had it happen too many times to count.

Assuming it was a disease, its all over the yard now. Do not plant another Butia.

Hoping it wasnt a disease, odds are that it was severe transplant shock though given the fact that it had just been moved a month or two before.

Went ahead and pulled it out today. When i say pull, i mean literally pull. It came out of the ground with no effort. I basically killed it when i stuck the shovel in the ground to move it.

Ok well i have an empty hole in the front yard now so i have 3 options available to me.

1) Plant the super mule in place of the dead pindo
2) Plant the new pindo that i just bought in place of the dead pindo
3) Plant nothing at all

What do yall think?

That's a good question, I guess it depends on what you think killed it.  If it was just a cold snap in January that gave it a crown rot infection, those fungi are all around everywhere, every day.  If that was the case then replacing it with another Pindo or Mule might not be a big risk.  A root or trunk rot like Thielaviopsis is probably more of a risk.  As an example, here's a big Pindo that died from some kind of crown rot.  The entire crown collapsed except for one single center spear, and a couple of months later the whole thing was dead.  But the other 5 big Pindos in a row are all still fine 4.5 years later, even though they just left the collapsed trunk to lay there and rot...

I would not plant anything related to a Pindo palm there. You could try a Sabal or crape myrtle.

I opted to fill in the hole, i planted the new pindo not far from the original location.
