Verschaffeltia splendida

I picked one up at the local Bunnings (Australia’s version of Lowe’s/Home Depot) more than 6 months ago. I finally put it in the ground in my front yard. Does anyone have any experience with this “splendid” species?

The little coconut I planted last year has gotten over its root-wrap and is looking good, and the foxtail that came with the house is finally putting on some size.

I have had one in the ground for about 3 years. It was about the size of yours when planted and now it is about 6.5ft tall. They like consistent water. I provide supplemental water when we haven't received rain for 4 days or more. I find it to be a beautiful and low maintenance palm outside supplemental watering and ,in my area, occasional cold protection when the temperature drop to 7c or lower.

Wow--you're growing this in our old town! (Unless you no longer live in Indialantic.) I don't remember seeing this species around Indialantic, but it wasn't on my radar when we lived there.

I still live in Indialantic.  What a small world! I haven't seen one in anyone else's yard,  but I know there are a few around, but likely in people's backyards.  Your new location looks beautiful and I imagine more tropical. I have also planted a few Hydriastele beguinii Obi Island and they seem to be just as easy and another beautiful entire leaf, but with a different enough appearance to add some variety.

Wish I could find them in big box stores.

My latitude is 16.7S, and I’m about a block from the beach, so it never gets cold here, though winter lows in the 50s are possible. As far as I know, nothing is too cold tender to be grown here, though the clay soil is not very good (my papayas look terrible, for example).

considering how far north it is, Indialantic has an amazing climate, and it’s been a 10a/10b for most of the past century. I’m not surprised you’re able to grow this palm.
