Licuala Grandis fronds are browning/yellowing :(

I recently moved to a new apartment with south/east facing windows, so I'm getting constant sunlight. Any insight would be much appreciated!

  • Got this back in July 2021
  • It's in a 14" pot
  • Not quite sure what the soil mixture is like, but it's fast draining
  • Placed in shade and still receives upwards to 1000 foot candles of light.
  • I water when the top 2/3 inches of soil are dry.
    • I water it in the bathtub and I let it dry out before placing it back in the clear container -- is it fine to use this clear container?
  • Have not fertilized
  • 2 new fronds have opened up, 1 is growing

r/plantclinic - The yellowing is a recent development -- is this an indicator of needing more nutrients?r/plantclinic - Licuala grandis fronds are developing a lot of brown spots and now with yellow :( just moved to a new apt. where I get constant sun from South + East facing windowsr/plantclinic - Center fronds are new and doing finer/plantclinic - Licuala grandis fronds are developing a lot of brown spots and now with yellow :( just moved to a new apt. where I get constant sun from South + East facing windows

It could be a lot of things. It could be in shock from it's new enviromment. It could be tap water. It could be too much light if the plant was greenhouse grown. Could be lack of humidity.

I've only tried to grow one Licuala, and it basically died the moment I put it in a pot (it was shipped to me bare root).

I’m no expert on these (or any plants for that matter :laugh2: ) but if that was mine I would add soil to the bottom of that pot or repot the whole thing. I’d keep it a little moister and definitely fertilize it with some slow release fertilizer at least every 6 months. Again if it were me i’d try Osmocote plus or similar. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will chime in. Good luck!
