Germinating Queen Palm Seeds, and I have some questions.

Recommended Posts

I gathered some Queen Palm seeds a couple of weeks ago, i cleaned at least 4 of the 13 off, soaked two of them in water, then put them in my little germination setup. Out of the two, one has germinated just within the past day or so. So now the question is, are these remote germinators? How deep does the pot need to be?

Thanks! It should be ready for a pot within the next couple of days.

Solo cup is fine as well let it fill the cup up with roots for a bit. Don’t go too big of a pot

The pot i had in mind was probably too big to begin with. Its about 5 1/2" deep, not sure of the width but i know its 4" or more. Ill definitely be looking into solo cups!

Agree with the others regarding pot size.  And yes, they are remote germinators.:)

Queen palms are not remote germinators. They germinate adjacently just like their well known relative Cocos nucifera, the coconut.

I disagree.  Not my photo (from florida-palm-trees.com) but the photo on the left shows the seed petiole connecting the seed to the cotyledonary sheath.  If it were an adjacent germinator there would be no seed petiole and the cotyledonary sheath would literally be adjacent to the seed.  It might appear to be adjacent because of the length of the seed petiole (or cotyledonary petiole) that is inside of the nut.

In this thread note that Syagrus sancona is described as a remote germinator which is even more closely related.

I really like those older threads too.  @Pal Meir did a fantastic job of labeling seedling photos.  He started one called "My Germination Projects" which had many different species of palm seedling photos labeled and he added many more in different threads.
