Las Palmas Norte
Is there a visual difference between W. robusta and W. filifera seed, something that may be able to distinguish species. I know they hybridize freely, but I'm referring to pure form of each. Thanks in advance, Cheers, Barrie

But to be honest I haven't tried to compare them side-by-side. Recently I sent hundreds of filibusta seeds to a member and there was some variation in color - some tan, some dark brown and all pretty much the same size. I noticed the same color variations in seeds from what appeared to be "pure" filifera as well but whether the variations are due to hybrid influence I don't know. Since the local trees are not in habitat they might all be hybrids to some extent. Maybe someone who has collected seeds in habitat can chime in. 1 Jon Sunder
kinzyjr
I've collected seeds of Washingtonia filifera in habitat (Moapa Valley, NV) and we have hundreds of Washingtonia robusta lining Cleveland Heights Blvd. here in town. No difference in the seeds unless there is something you can see under a microscope. It's one of those things where, if you didn't label the pot when you planted them, there would be no way to tell after the fact. This might be a filibusta hybrid: https://www.google.com/maps/@28.011259,-81.9647165,3a,64.3y,113.1h,101.68t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sIB-BsoZxdTVkMrmG34obFA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 If so... no discernible difference in seeds. 1 Lakeland, FL USDA Zone (2012): 9b | Sunset Zone: 26 | Record Low: 20F/-6.67C (1985, 1962) | Record Low USDA Zone: 9a | 30-Year Avg.
