Dypsis lutescens Fused Leaf 4-year seedlings x4 in 1g

Featured Replies

This true-from-seed mutation of the normally common Golden Cane Palm came to the attention of PalmTalk during the 2016 Biennial in Thailand where this mutation originated. I bought 10 seeds from RPS the following year or so and currently have four extra seedlings that need new homes. These seedlings were agonizingly slow growing compared to the standard golden cane and these are four years old. They do germinate true from seed as RPS claims so maybe in the future this Fused Leaf Form will become more easily available. See info below:

just wanted to update this topic on what my fused leaf has grown into. It is about ready to go in the ground

@PalmMom007 that's wild!  You should definitely grow seedlings of that one and sell them.  :D  I have a "Whole Leaf" Elaeis Guineensis that's getting similarly wild and funky!

Oh wow! Thats a neat looking mutation.

Looking great, Shelby. Does anybody know whether this cultivar flowers and sets viable seeds? I know the Vietnam and Thai dwarf forms neither flower nor set any seeds so must be propagated by division.

Actually after studying Shelby’s photo I am wondering whether ‘Fused Leaf’ is another dwarf form of C lutescens. How tall does this cultivar get?

Hey Meg.  Would love to have seeds or seedlings if ever available.

I'm not sure but I think this cultivar does not flower nor set seeds. Propagation by division only. I don't divide mine because of risk of losing the whole plant to root rot.

Any updated pictures to share?

I've been thinking and I believe I grew mine from seeds I got from RPS around 2016 after the Biennial in Thailand. But mine have yet to flower even though they are 10 years old. If they do I will set seeds aside for you. Their growth pattern, aside from the fused leaves, is not typical for a golden cane. They are definitely on the dwarfish side.

I am nearing the end of a brutal marathon catch-up clean out of my gardens. Some haven't been maintained for the past 2-4 years. I am nearing the end but the summer heat has moved in and limited my ability to trim, mulch and fertilize. I will take photos when we are done and include the fused leaf lutescens.

Awesome.  Thanks and sounds good.
