Why do some big box stores call christmas palms adonidia merrillii and some veitchia merrillii, are they the same?? Thanks!

Veitchia merrillii is the old name for Adonidia merrillii.  Yes, they're synonyms: http://theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-212035

Actually Adonodia is the older name. Plant naming convention dictates that the oldest valid name is the correct one. They were Adonidia merrillii before somebody reclassified them into the genus Veitchia. They were more recently separated back into their own genus and the name reverted to the older one. Regardless of the name it's still the same plant.
