Collectorpalms
Augusta, Georgia has had a very good climate. Only January 1985 looks bad. And it was bad for Less than 48 hours. it also helps that Palmettos are readily available and the soil is great for Trachycarpus and Butia. 30 Year Zone Average 20F. I know there's more in Augusta, I found a pretty large one on google maps in a yard cross the Savannah river in North Augusta, that whole neighborhood is packed with palms, mostly sabals. Turtlesteve
For some reason most of these pictures aren’t loading for me. Augusta has a perfect set of circumstances to provide favorable microclimates. The Savannah river valley provides really good cold air drainage and bluffs or hillsides on the Georgia stay warmer during typical bad freezes here. The cold air moves in from the northeast, so the SC side is not so lucky. Unfortunately I’m in a bit of a cold sink in Aiken. In the last bad freeze it was 13/14F here but parts of Augusta stayed over 20. There is a mule palm near one of the furniture warehouses off I-20, and a few other oddities (like a tortured CIDP in the South Carolina Piedmont that refuses to die). @JLeVert has some nice palms in Augusta too, but I haven’t heard from him in a while.

So you live in Aiken, Aiken is amazingly landscaped, better than downtown Augusta with the live oak tunnel and all. There are many live oaks in downtown Augusta but why wasn't it landscaped like Aiken or Savannah? And the mule palm might be my favorite new palm tree, it looks very tropical. A lot of landscaping was done by a local mail order nursery (Woodlanders inc). They probably have one of the largest (if not the largest) collections of oak species anywhere, plus a whole bunch of other rare stuff. But, relatively few palms outside of the common zone 8 species. Georgia use to be filled with Long Leaf Pine and wild prairies under their canopy . Slash Pine, but to a greater degree loblolly Pine, has taken over the state through timber and lumber production.
