Calyptrocalyx elegans v.boakak

Central Floridave

Recommended Posts

Planted 6 years ago. Zero care. Under heavy shaded live oak.  I’d semi forgotten this palm until Facebook memories reminded me I got it from floribunda in 2015. Jeff Recommended to try.   Possible cooler tolerant calyptrocalyx. I’m in a microclimate south Merritt Island but this hasn’t croaked like the other true tropical have.  Lowest temps seen prob upper 30F.  Cool thing. Never watered or fertilized.  Before (‘15 w/tag) and after (yesterday w/dog) photos.

Beautiful! I love Calyptrocalyx. I'm thinking of buying several on my next order to Floribunda. Gotta make the money first.

My Calyptrocalyx elegans v. Boalak is in part sun and easily visible from my house.

My hand above for scale. Below is a few days later as the leaflets expand.

Now that it is clumping vigorously, there are often two new leaves at once as barely seen in today's photo. This is just a charming genus so grow them all if you can!

This plant is also drought and alkaline soil tolerant. Its one of my favorites and had done well while other palms and heliconia have even died. Very robust

I wanted to confirm the name of this palm whose label was lost in Hurricane Fiona in September. Easy to do with Palm Talk’s search engine!

As you can see the palm itself was untouched by the hurricane.

I've lost the label on this palm. I'm thinking it is the same species.  Any guesses?   It is from the same floribunda order I made in 2014.

You can see how well protected the palm is.  It catches rain off the roof and probably why bigger than the one I posted above.
