Nice study Dave!  Where's a pic of the "replacement" palm?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Here's a closeup of the Replacement Palm, spears are pushing, and I'm doing every crazy thing I can think of to make it push some more, before it gets cold, only a few months away.

Again, thank you all!

I'm almost certain this is a D. lastelliana, which, if it grows, will be a bigger treasure than the lost D. lepto.

That freeze was a serious [oedipal expletive] to this poor thing, thankfully I kept it under the too-heavy canopy of the tree of lust and etc.

Watering it right now, even giving it a little, you know, extra help, post-beer . . .

Dave, I'm glad you posted it regardless how it looks! It MUST survive with all the goodwill infused into it! :D

Seriously, I read on a post a while back about "manually" helping to open the fronds on "damaged" palms to get some of the photosynthesis going. I've been doing this with many palms in the past 3-4 months. The only ones that it only marginally helps if at all, are the 2 gal and under palms, the big guys love it!  (especially where  the "burnt/toasted" area of the spear that is "binding" it from opening)

Don't laugh - it saved my foxtail, despite being told that I'd damage it and to let it open on its own.  Had I not taken the chance, my foxtail would be a stick at the dump today.  I'm now tempted to help the overdue spear on my teddybear, since it still hasn't opened, and the tip is starting to look ratty and a bit dry.

I sorta did it.

I unfurled some of the leaflets, but the rest of the spear is still too tight.

I gave it a huge drink and a whole bucket of Miracle Gro . . . .

Good to see growth!

A Satakentia I planted this spring had a very slow-opening spear, so I repeatedly massaged it and helped pull the segments apart.  It finally opened fully after a month or so.  It and its mate are still much yellower than they should be, but leaves are forming and opening properly.  I've put some potted bromeliads around them to reduce glare from the pavement and provided a bit of extra fertilizer.  Heavy rains over the past several weeks seem to be helping.

The Archontophoenixes and Carpentarias that have been in the ground for at least a year are really booming.  The carpies were really yellowish and ratty looking last year.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

Dave, don't forget to prop up the kinked over green frond on the replacement palm so that it stays green longer.  This one can use all the photosynthesis that it can get.  You are doing a good job of manually opening that stubborn spear.  Just work at it a little every few days, avoiding that leaflets stick together to the point of ripping each other while manually separating them.  One of my R. borinquenas that I got from Greg had a stubborn spear that didn't open normally this month (it opened at the top and bottom, but was pinched closed in the middle for a few inches), and I was able to open it with minimal damage.  The goal is no damage, but this royal is so young that it needed the new frond to open at any cost.  Thanks again for the tour.  I appreciated it very much.
