Summer Down Under

Perth's coldest summer morning on record

As the sun rose over Western Australia on the first day of summer, it was feeling more like winter in Perth.

The temperature at 5:25am local time was only 6.6ºC, making this the city's coldest morning of summer in 124 years of records.

The previous coldest morning of the season was 7.9ºC in December 2007, while Perth's long-term average minimum temperature at this time of year is about 16ºC.

In fact, this morning's temperature would even be below-average for the middle of winter in Perth.
perth-1368337_1920_1.thumb.jpg.78fd980a18e23c6ad1bdef25485c963b.jpg

The unusually cold start to summer was caused by a high pressure ridge that moved over southwestern Australia in the wake of a cold front. This system caused clear skies and light winds to combine with a cool air mass, which are the ideal ingredients for producing low overnight temperatures.

This morning's chilly start comes after Perth's wettest November on record. The city collected 92mm of rain last month, trumping the previous record of 73.2mm from November 1984.

I was outside at 5.30am this morning and it was bloody cold! Turned into a nice day but it's certainly been a strange month and a weird start to summer.

Yesterday morning was cold in Albany (nothing unusual there) but we were about 3C warmer than Perth. It only got to 18.4C yesterday. Hobart is looking tropical in comparison. It’s the coldest start to winter.....I mean summer that I can recall.

Summer is starting to move in down here now. The temps here are now about equivalent to mid October in Perth. We will probably end the year with just over 900mm of rain.

Perth is expecting 40c tomorrow with rain and a thunderstorm in the late afternoon. Looks like Darwin is coming to us!

I think its going to be a weird summer down here. Just took a look at one long term forecast which goes out to 14 days and starting on Sunday it predicts 10 days in a row with rain forecast and 7 of those days is forecast thunderstorms with decent falls. Down close to the south coast farmers have cut their fields for hay and since then it has reshot nice green thick growth quite unlike what you normally see down here at this time. It's like the south of France in summer. The dairy farmers are particularly happy. If we get rain and thunderstorms then that grass will only keep growing and stay deep green. Not the same once you leave the coast though. Go 180km plus inland and it's dry, hot as hell, and the fields are basically covered with stubble only 2cm high. I feel sorry for the livestock that have to live on those fields.

Coldest December day since at least 1957 ( digitised records ) in Fitzroy Crossing today 25.8c and unless there is a temp spike between now and 9.00am tomorrow morning this will be the new record low.
Also 70 odd mm rain in the last few days with the gurus saying it is the onset of the Northern Monsoon.
Zilch in Darwin atm, although we expect increasing rain by the weekend.

We had 30C yesterday with moderate humidity, then today we peaked at about 16.5C with drissle and high winds with the max being within a degree of the minimum. In fact the temp has almost flatlined for the last 24hrs. It’s after 9pm and it’s 16.7C and rising. We were woken by a thunderstorm around 2am as well. Weird weather.

And it isn’t over yet. The interior of WA will resemble Lakefield NP in Cape York during the monsoon the way this is going. Port Hedland and Karratha will get the second low maybe as a cat 1 just before it hits land tomorrow. The heat and humidity forecast maps look kind of weird too.

That looks like Northern/Western NZ in mid Spring. But I guess that should not be a total surprise as it is WA's dairy farming zone.

Up to 10 days of dry sunny weather about to start so garden may not look as lush as today, again until Autumn. Depends if the cyclone set to form near New Caledonia comes close enough just before Christmas

I spent the day digging holes to plant 26 Metrosideros excelsa for a wind break. I got 8 fully planted but now I feel wrecked and heat stroked. It got to just over 29C here with humidity in the 60-70% zone. The sun though had one hell of a kick. I just looked online and the index was up around 13. Tomorrow is 21C and maybe a bit of rain if we are lucky. Hopefully I can get the plants all in as well.

Some really handy totals overnight and into this morning with a large cluster of storms tracking slowly across the Top End.

Some coastal instability also gave Darwinites a bit of a wake up call as well and thoroughly drenched the far northern suburbs.

Conditions have eased considerably now with cloudy but humid conditions prevailing, as all the activity now moves offshore or to the far SW Top End.

Some totals reported to 9 this morning include 81mm at Pt Stuart and 116mm at Mt Bundey training ground.

Further good rains in the Katherine region again with 85mm at Fergusson River.

Northern suburbs won lotto with 100mm at Heidi’s place in Lyons. Muirhead not far behind with 70-80mm reported.
( Unreal the Lyons and Muirhead totals.....just shows how coastal these showers were. Next door at Leanyer Heights ( my place )- 18.5mm )

Palmerston got rogered however with 1.6mm yesterday arvo and .4mm this morning

Looks like being a fairly stable day now for Darwin before further late action begins to creep back in.

Good chance of another wake up call in the morning .

Have been getting some good rain here and looks like more heading this way. Some places close to the QLD/NSW border have had over 400mm in the last 24hr. Man that's a lot of water.

This afternoon's run from the German ICON model is a bit of an eye opener for the next 7 days! Usually it's one of the more conservative models.

Glad to see it drying out a bit down my way. It may actually heat up then. Sunday was quite wet with thunderstorms. Now we just have cool cloudy gloomy days. Not summer at all.

LOL. Actually March is warmer than December down here. March is still very much summer, then April comes along and ruins the party.

On another note, maybe a bit too early to say but it looks like Port Hedland may get quite wet around Xmas Eve due to a tropical swirly thing drifting in off the ocean.

Actually, the higher latitudes down south should follow the US standards of measuring the seasons ie by the passage of the sun, not the dates on the calendar  Summer actually starts ( by the sun ) on the Summer Solstice 21st-22nd Dec and finishes with the March Equinox. This is a far more accurate representation of 'Summer' in the Southern States, and reflects the seasonal lag. Same as winter.... should start 21st-22nd June and finish with the Sept Spring Equinox.

Beat ya!!!!! I got 30.4mm out of that and then 26.2mm from yesterday's storm. I'm running just a bit above average for December now The monsoon trough is due to 'touch down' today, La Nina is delivering.

I've had 126.8mm so far this month, substantially below the monthly mean of 292.5mm. Feels underwhelming although to be fair, most of our Northern Suburbs rain happens with the first monsoonal burst, which is close, but hasn't happened yet.
28.8mm in the 24 hours to 9.00am this morning.
Bring it on !

Time to put on the gumboots.

Warning01.JPG.a6cd3b0038fdd033cba21eca36041d21.JPG

Weather Situation: A monsoon trough lies across the north coast of the Top End and is expected to deepen during Friday as a low pressure system develops near the Cobourg Peninsula. During Friday night and Saturday, the tropical low is expected to move across the northern Daly District and into the southern Timor Sea with heavy rain extending into western parts of the Top End, including Darwin.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to continue and increase about the eastern Carpentaria and eastern Arnhem Districts, particularly near the coast. HEAVY RAIN will extend into the western Arnhem District during today and across the Daly District overnight.

Widespread 24 hour rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm are likely across inland parts of the warning area with isolated falls to 100 mm. In coastal areas, 24 hour rainfall totals may exceed 150 mm.

Increasing monsoonal winds across the Gulf of Carpentaria are expected to cause ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES, which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas between Nhulunbuy and the Queensland border coinciding with high tide early on Saturday morning.

During Friday, locally DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are possible with thunderstorms in the eastern Carpentaria and eastern Arnhem Districts, extending west to the northern and western Daly District overnight.

Locations which may be affected include Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Palmerston, Jabiru, Maningrida, Wadeye, Wurrumiyanga, Nauiyu and Borroloola.

Heat Wave For Western Australia Over Christmas Lead-up

The southern half of WA, especially the west coast, will see heat-wave type conditions starting in the new week and leading up to Christmas Day.Days are already over 30 degrees in Perth and Geraldton this weekend, and the hot days will begin in earnest in Geraldton on Monday 21st and in Perth on Tuesday 22nd.  The three days leading up to Christmas Day are then forecast to stay in the high thirties for Perth, with the hottest day likely to be Wednesday 23rd when a top just shy of 40 degrees is expected.

In Geraldton, Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be the hottest days, exceeding 40 degrees. Both centres will experience very warm nights during this period also, with temperatures staying in the high twenties until well after dark, particularly on the 22nd and 23rd.

The hot air is being funnelled south by a low developing in the monsoon trough over the far north of the country.  While moisture from the low is being swept over the east of the country, causing widespread storms, rain and humidity, at lower levels, easterly winds circulating the low are pushing hot interior air towards the west coast, leading to the heat.

Image: Surface temperature (coloured), 10 metre wind streamlines (black) and relative humidity at approximately 10,000 metres (green shades) for Wednesday 23rd December, 2020.  From the ECMWF global model.
Even Bunbury is likely to reach 30 degrees over the Tuesday to Thursday period, with Wednesday 23rd a chance to reach the mid-thirties. Further east, Albany is pegged to have a hot day on Christmas Eve as the hot air mass reaches its southernmost extent.

Some cloud cover and the increased likelihood of seabreezes on Christmas Eve may drop the temperatures very slightly but it won't be noticeably cooler until a southwesterly change filters over the region during Christmas Day.

A welcome present indeed.

It won’t be a proper heatwave down here. Windy.com has us hitting 28,29C on Thursday then back to cloudy 20C on Saturday. Nice and warm on Thursday then.

Just checked Windy.com then and now it’s saying 34C on Thursday. So I take that back. 34C is quite hot for down here.
