After a bit of a dry period the rain came back with heavy rain and hail. I came home in 6C squalls. Winter reminding me it hasn’t gone anywhere.

Early rain for you guys. They were saying an early monsoon up your way so I suppose an early buildup is imminent.

Not the consistent humidity of the build up yet but it is warming up. The same in the eastern Kimberley, the western Kimberley is a bit behind.

It is, but still above average for this time of the year.
For example, Darwin Airport, up until 2019, had recorded only 14 days above 35c in August since 1941. Last year ( 2020 ) there were 5 such days, and this year ( 2021 ) there have been 4 days above 35c.  Way above the long term norms, in fact August 2021 will be a record hot month for max temps in Darwin, with a 33.3, av mean max.. ( 0.2c higher than the 2017 record ).

Not unusual for Noonamah to get temps of 37 and 38 in late August. Darwin gets the sea breezes whereas Noonamah often misses out.

Today marks the end of winter on the calendar in the Southern Hemisphere and the start of the growing season. Generally by Sep 7 the risk of any frost is gone here. Looking ahead at this coming week there are some cold mornings but nothing really bad, but by Sep 7 we have some nice spring weather coming. This weekend I’m starting to plant a new area with some Archontophoenix and Rhopalostylis to start the growing season off. So far we are at 924mm of rain for the year which is our average yearly rainfall. Let’s see what spring brings us this year.

And record heat to finish off August....Batchelor, Gove, Maningrida, Milingimbi, Groote Airport, Oenpelli, Jabiru, Pirlangimpi, Ngayawili have all equalled or exceeded their August record max temps in the last day or so. More records likely today, with the forecast top of 39c at Jabiru.

Darwin Airport ( 1941-2021 ) 12.4239°S 130.8925°E 30m AMSL.

August was another well above month for max temps, min temps and rainfall. the 19.2mm at the Airport was the wettest August since 1988 when 51.2mm fell.
The mean max for the month, 33.4c, is a full 2c above the long term averages ( since 1941 ) and 0.3c above the previous record set in 2017.
The mean min temp of 21.5c is 1.2c above the the long term averages.
Only 4 overnights dipped below 20c, the lowest number of such mornings since 1992. ( Average is 13 August mornings per year below 20c )
And, for the second year in a row, Darwin recorded 5 +35c days in August 2021. Up until 2019, there had only been 14 +35c August days since 1941. The total is now 24, after 5 such August days in 2020 and 5 such August days in 2021.
Bring On The Build Up !

Winter still hanging on here with cold miserable conditions. Yesterday morning it was 5C and raining heavy on the way to work. Normally those temps are almost too low for rain here. We had quite heavy hail at points through the day. The good point is we’ve turned the corner and the weather is slowly warming to 25C on Tuesday which will feel amazing. The place was drying out a bit but now it’s slushy again.

Was a cold, wet and windy day in Perth yesterday, today is cold as well around 16c. By Monday it's expected to be a sunny 25c and 28c on Tuesday, quite an improvement.

Well, I think I can say that down on the south coast we got thru winter without any frost or any ice on the car in the morning at all. It’s just been stupidly wet. I’ve lost things though to be waterlogged which is not a usual occurrence.
