Pretty much.

It does get some filtered light throughout the day.

Well….looked at the plant this morning and it appears to have cracked open its spear. I was fearing it was not Ampasindavae and had a couple other PT’rs state their opinion on the ID. I thought possibly another form of Prestoniana like OCWS. It’s ID relied heavily on whether it pushed a colored frond or not so it was a bit of a waiting game. Drumroll…….

Still not 100% it’s Ampasindavae but all the possible ID’s id be ok with had a colored leaf so it’s good news and I’m super stoked about it.

Missed the latest posts in this thread, looking good everyone.

Dale, back in the early 2000’s I had never even heard of this palm, available species were a bit limited, at least for a newbie like me.

Yours looks like the type, with the new colored leaf. You know, mine used to throw the new red/orange leaf, but it’s been awhile since it’s done that. I wonder if I’ve just missed it or if the palm grows out of that stage.

I’ve posted these photos before, somewhere on PT, but here they are again.

Tim,

id be happy if it looks 1/2 as good as yours. Again, not sure WTF it is but the fact it has a tinted leaf is a good thing in my book.

Not the big island, only getting one leaf a year, and it's worth the wait....

Just like @TomJ says, this palm is painfully slow here in SoCal. It’s been slightly over a year since last post and I’m just getting a new spear. It doesn’t look good either but it’s not dead so I’m going to roll with it.

I finally planted this one out in August of 24 so just about 7 months in the ground. This area can flood so I mounded it up more than a foot, surrounded it with a liner I cut down and topped of with turface. It took a lot of sun last summer and didn’t hate it but it didn’t love it. Still has a lime green instead of the dark green it had in the pot.

Just an update as my Ampasindavae just cracked open another leaf. Definitive color just like last time. Still super slow but this leaf did grow faster than the last. I’m hoping it picks up speed here in the next year or two. Can’t get the guts to cut off the old leaf so the entire plant looks marginal. Last leaf still looks good.

I’m ok with slow, it could be dead.

That sure looks like my palm from Blue Bell that was tagged “Ovobontsira” but I think is more Metallic Ovobontsira than Ampasindavae. I could be wrong though since I don’t have any of the latter and am only basing the looks off of the ones I saw in Josh’s greenhouse a few years ago 🤷‍♂️

Now Chrysalidocarpus loucoubensis for those willing to conform 🤣

Rob, you could be right. Others have said the same actually. I’m not 100% sure what it is except a heeled big body Dypsis with a a colored leaf. I’m ok if it’s Ampasindavae, Ovobontsira or Loucobensis. I can’t say Ive seen any of those in gardens I’ve toured. All seem to be a bit of a zone push here. Just stoked it’s growing. 👍🏻

Last post was in October when it opened a leaf and it just opened another yesterday. It does seem to be getting faster as the last leaf took a whole year. It’s a super slow palm for me but it’s not dead so I’m stoked. The leaves holding look perfect too so that’s good. Not too impressive tho.

Dang! Looking good Dale, your patience is being rewarded. It’s definitely picking up speed. Prepare for some long fronds.
