After a cool-ish end to Nov,  approaching the heart of the holidays in the mid to upper 70s ..may even see a few 80s over the weekend or early next week.

Not all that atypical here

Not as typical?

Was back in California last weekend/ start of this week

While not as warm as here, even with a few foggy mornings, temps were in the mid 60s.

Heading home yesterday, temps were in the low / mid 80s while passing thru socal ..WEST of the deserts.

Definitely not x-mas -y

..unless x mas = a BBQ / fire in the fire pit,  ...by the pool

Currently 67 and I have no idea why kids think that's so funny. Meanwhile, if it was 69 I'd say "nice," because I know how the Internet works.

After a night spent counting shooting stars under mainly clear skies, headed for a sunny to partly cloudy Sunday in December in the low 80s ..80 ..or 82 ( or 3 ) anything above 78 will break the daily record.

May break another tomorrow too ( 80 or 81 predicted currently )

Shave off a deg. or 3 for next week but staying warm regardless

...if the current local forecast from time and date is correct, might see another 80 or two right around Xmas.

As for any rain?  Gfs tries to bring some sort of wet stuff into the southwest by maybe new years.

On the other hand, most current extended forecasts keep things warm w/ slimmer " wet signal" opportunities here.

Nor. / Cen. CA might see actual rain return sometime over the next couple weeks.

Checking on the P.V.? Here's yesterday's sub seasonal from the ECMWF..

ps2png-worker-commands-57b4ffdf5d-97jg8-6fe5cac1a363ec1525f54343b6cc9fd8-5hzc1zgl.png.e0ebc726580d634eaecaeeacaffa49ba.png

If it is correct, holds. ..or whatever,  new year could kick off quite warm ( because of a stronger than avrg. PV keeping any real cold away )

.. we'll see..

Looking further out, being in between laptops I couldn't post an in depth on my thoughts for this winter here..

Regardless,  atm, things are going as I thought they might this year.

Looking forward?  Probably  still some flavor of the same.

Checking all the models used by Copernicus,  the one thing that sicks out is that all of the SST graphics keep the n pac.,vCA margin, and waters off Mex. quite warm / above normal over the coming months. Possibly strengthening ( the warm leaning anomalies ) come spring.

Could make for an interesting warm season ahead across the region ..if these forecast thoughts pan out.

For now, BBQ for Xmas is sounding good..

Happy winter solstice! Certainly doesn't feel like winter....80 plus/27C at both airports. The local weather people keep pushing up the projected highs into and past Christmas, they underestimated the heat today too 😅

Cloudy, drippy ...enough to wet the sidewalk at times... but mild (70 at 1:41pm local )

Supposed to see another round of showers later but ...won't be surprised if any rain stays north and west of the east side of the valley.

Barely any snow from this system either for the high country ..until maybe Sat.  when some flurries might reach Flagstaff.

Other than that?  Staying mild as we reach the end of 2025 and kick off 2026.

If the drier forecasts on the board atm pan out, could make another run at 80f again right around ..or shortly after.. new years and the start of winter month #2.

Further out?  Less than 35 days from the start of the Tucson Gem and Mineral show ..the local event that signals the close out of our winters / start of " spring " here.

By the time the first events are under way around town ( generally kicking off during last week or so in Jan. ) first 80+ days of the year could be in the forecast ..or visible somewhere in the shorter term extenders ( say those looking into mid / late Feb. )

Possibility of any sub 35f mornings?  Waning.

..as " winter " turns towards the exit,  in the low desert.

👍

Current temp 50 degrees and windy. Feels colder.

Held just above freezing last night by me. Keeps the season freeze count at 3 nights. But tonight low of 31 expected. Don’t think I’ll avoid it again.

I knew the cold front was coming.

Last night I spent a few hours in the grow room, nice and toasty. Got kinda sweaty cleaning and planting and potting as one does, stepped outside and holy poop on a stick it was 35°.

It's about that now and it's only 6:45pm.

Final day of 25:  Mid 60s under cloudy …and drippy ( at times ) skies.

perhaps a light, wetting rain overnight, then staying sorta sunny / sorta unsettled as 2026 arrives. Temps appear to hang somewhere in the 60s / lower 70s as the week ends / new week,  of the mew year kicks off …depending if we dry out,  ..or see more rain chances.

.. we’ll see if …or when.. any sub - 39F nights show up in the forecasts as the middle of winter ( January ) proceeds.

That said, the clock is already ticking on  any “ chilly “ nights locally.

CanSips longer range forecasts should update tonight /  CFS -es thoughts in a couple days so we’ ll see what they’ re seeing for the back half of winter ….and beyond.. later.

As for that dreaded P.V.???

todays thoughts….

At 7am your temperature has already started rising. Mine will stay like this until 8.30am because of the hill on the east. My weather app said you had 5 C minimum in your coastal house, it was obv wrong. Very cold weather eh? Let's see how often this will happen.

Happy New Year!

Actually we are on the same line. Also here sun rises behind the hill. In fact temperature has jut fallen a bit since last recording. You are situated in a cold air trap, but I am Xtremely exposed  to northern wind.  And Happy N Y too.

BTW what is the weather application you use and where exactly is the relevant weather station situated?

That's good news for me, given that you have a grown Roystonea in your garden!

I am not sure where the station is but the app "meteomatics" always gives the exact temperature of my area and always agrees with the thermometers in my garden! I am impressed.

Even colder as expected tonight. I recorded 31 F / -0.5 C at 6am and unfortunately also light frost on the areas of the garden that are not under canopy. No wind, it's purely radiational cold. 5km to the south, on the coast it is 43 F / 6 C.

The sea makes a huge difference man... you are a solid 10a without frost, while I am a 9b with frost. The proximity to the sea is the most important factor for tropical plants in Greece I believe.

Actually I do have frost, only this time was not my turn. Sea plays a significant role, if there are warm currents and if water is not deep at an extended distance.  Otherwise (which is sadly my case) significance of sea proximity diminishes dramatically.

Oh is the sea shallow near you? I see. I thought you'd never get frost there! Canopy is also so important; I had no frost under the orange trees where many sensitive plants are, like my Kentia. Let's see if they survive. Hopefully next year most of my garden will be in shade.

When I lived in Nea Makri near the sea, the minimum I ever saw was 2 C. So I thought it is the normal yearly minimum for coastal Attica.

Not shallow water, which gets warmed up by sun more quickly, instead abruptly deep water with cold currents.  Deep water is not a positive asset in such case. For how long did you reside in Nea Makri? Schinias is shallow water to my knowledge. Nevertheless Nea Makri is by no means 10B, as one may conclude from your own experience.

The sky was quite clear yesterday so it went down to 7 C if I remember correctly. Was it cloudy there?

Tonight it's a lot warmer.

64F at 10:32AM local, headed for a partly cloudy 70 - 73 or so later..  Low 70s / upper 60s hang on thru Monday or Tues. before another ..mainly dry..  storm knocks back temps a bit.

First sub - 40 ( That's a dash,  ...not a minus )  of the new year is on the board but,  ..we'll see if we drop that low.  Really any day with a " suggested " low near 40 could end up being upper 30s  - something  in the yard so,  Could see a few days next week / weekend  dip into the high 30s.

Overall, standard fare forecast for the first half of January during a fairly dry winter here over the next 10 or so days..

Nice, very mild. Well, as you know, west Greece and east Greece are different countries when it comes to the weather.

Anyway, technically I am still zone 10a until now hahaha.

Hi Marcus, these are summer temperatures—at least they would be here. Did you and your family have a good New Year's Eve? Unfortunately, it's very cold here, colder than normal, but you would definitely like it. There's snow on the ground and yes, it looks beautiful. We wish you a happy new year here. It's only January 4, so it still counts. We haven't had any days of ice yet. However, we did have a low temperature of -8.6°C here in the community garden, which is really cold. It was freezing, but luckily it rose to between 2 and 4°C during the day, which we are very happy about...

Best regards from the mild Lake Constance region—that was a good joke, or 😁

Sunny ( for most areas of town. Some clouds hanging around to the west / north ) and 71F at 3:49PM as the first weekend of 26 and ..most.. of the holiday lights come down for the year..

Week ahead looks ..pretty avrg.  Maybe more spit mid week. Yesssir, when it comes to rain,  anything less than .25" is  ..spit.

Dry ( ..or so it appears atm ) beyond that slight chance for rain.

Screenshot2026-01-04at15-44-24ChandlerAZ10-DayWeatherForecastWeatherUnderground.thumb.png.8484be523a9e8d4dc33ed95469d1a5f2.png

Looking at the two, main extended forecasts i trust the most ( ..which isn't 100% btw )  Not too bad.

Like time and date's more but it has a tendency to flip n' flop more than WX Undergrounds.. Heck, half an hour ago, it was tempting me with a couple 80F days as we approach mid month.

Current " flip " holds temps down in the more logical lower 70s for the same timeframe..  We'll see if either pans out.

Screenshot2026-01-04at15-46-31ChandlerArizonaUSA14dayweatherforecast.thumb.png.06ab1c7bf5b2402d73e57afede87cd0f.png

That said, ..If today's 6 - 10 and 8 - 14 day thoughts from the CPC are roughly " in the park " as we head forward,  perhaps the first 80F day(s) of 2026 are possible,  sooner than i'd thought.   Nice thought,  but,  ..we'll see..

Regardless,  not a bad look / nuthin' to howl about  as we trek thru the middle of  " winter "  here in the low desert / rest of the Southwest..  Think CA could use a nice break from the rain again too.

Pretty decent Spring Wildflower season appears to be locked in for most of the state this year.  Some pockets of color around to enjoy i'm sure ..but,   not looking like a " super - year " out here this spring..

Want a lot of Snow in the mountains ..Outside parts of the Pac. N.W / upper interior west / Sierra? ( Don't think it's looking all that great, despite the storms, up there too ) this winter ain't looking like your winner.  Still some time of course,  ..but,  you'd be better not to place any bets on a February or March Miracle this year.

Hey Tom, thank you for the kind message.  Let me give you my honest opinion about warm winters.  The only thing why I pray for a mild winter is because of my plants , that's the only reason. I can't stand long periods of hot weather and I really hoped for a cooler winter to get a break from the never-ending summer lol. We have 2 more months of zick zack weather then the weather patterns become more stable and warmer.  I miss the snow that's why I'm going to spend 5 days in Colorado next week.

I feel you.. if it wasn't for my plants I'd go live in the coldest part of my country. Summer heat makes me miserable. Winters on the other hand are when I feel my best and most energetic. I also miss snow.
