Warm ..but not quite as warm as was forecast, thanks to extensive and thick mid and high clouds passing overhead through the day..  Clouds may break a little more tomorrow and on Wed / Thursday, which could add a deg or two to the suggested highs for one or all three days.  ..At least via WxU's current  forecast. Local NWS wants to introduce shower chances as soon as tomorrow night / Wed. morning ..well ahead of the " Main Show "  Thursday - Sat.  ..Possible, ..but i have my personal doubts..

Screenshot2023-12-18at15-50-29ChandlerAZ10-DayWeatherForecastWeatherUnderground.png.52bc256d55a2cb67c695671933fcc3db.png

As far as the main show is concerned, Friday could be quite wet, ..if the current forecast holds.  NWS currently puts the potential for 1" ..or slightly more.. at around 30-40% Other forecast thoughts have wavered either side of that. We'll see.

Cools off and clears out again on X-mass Eve / Day.  Watching for another " warm " spell as the year closes out, and 2024 begins..

An exceptionally mild night here last night. I am reporting 12.7C / 55F this morning at 8am.

Not much difference with the capital, which did not drop below 13C / 56F last night. Although they have some rain falling there currently.

Southern England was one of the warmest places in Europe overnight, again. London looks like it was probably the warmest capital city in Europe.

Some colder weather on the horizon? Hard to say. Certainly some cooler nights, but probably staying pretty mild for the foreseeable. Double digit days likely going beyond Christmas…

Chance of rain for Friday has gone up to nearly 100%. Got a few stray drops today that didn't make anything wet but maybe some measurable rain starting any time.

Gonna be three straight Decembers with at least double the average rainfall - but still fairly light on the year.

A much colder night last night under clear skies here, with an ultimate low of 4.3C / 40F. Finally a bit of sun today as well, although it is a bit of a chilly day. I am only reporting 10.1C / 50F at midday here today. The mild theme continues though, especially in regards to nighttime temps. Could see 15-16C / 60F on Thursday and Sunday, possibly.

Europe in general is looking pretty damn mild right now with the exception of Scandinavia, which is to be expected anyway. Eastern Europe especially is running way above average, for now at least.

Some mild, light, mid-week Morning showers and a flash of lightning or two movin' through the central deserts, with clearing skies right behind..  Mid 50s atm, that should warm to the lower to mid 70s later ..if skies stay clear.

Screenshot2023-12-20at09-26-25ChandlerAZ10-DayWeatherForecastWeatherUnderground.png.44e30d2e5cc32d2c01166172eafe82d1.png

Tomorrow looks less cloudy to start, which may translate to a warmer day.  If that happens, Phoenix may flirt with a daily record high.  75-78F forecast round the neighborhood.  Much anticipated Wet Friday rolls in shortly after sundown..

Still some minor disagreement on just how much rain may end up falling Friday, though at least .50" is looking more set in stone Heavier bands set up overhead?,  could see a little more than 1" around the valley..   To the east or more north of town? maybe a little less than 1"..  A good. much welcomed soaking either way.

As things clear out on X- Mass eve, Highs come back down to about average, while keeping an eye on how low lows go..  Doesn't look too cold, but, with higher post- rainfall Dew Points / humidity levels, there could be a couple mornings where a little, light, patchy frost turns up on rooftops and open grassy areas.

As it appears right now,  X-mass week looks to be mild to warming, ...as we reach the end of '23,  and dry ..at least here.  Storm door may stay open for CA, ..Nor. Cal in particular.  We'll see..

Overall, not a bad way to close out 2023.  1 month, 2 weeks to go for  " winter ",  in the desert "  once we hit New Years Day. :greenthumb:

Low of 43f/6c and a max of 53f/11.6c.  Despite the cold start to December it looks like December will end around average.

The temperature is going to rise a bit as the night progresses. We will probably be looking at 13C / 55F by sunrise, especially in London. The nights have been very mild in recent weeks. Christmas Eve looks especially mild as well.

A very warm night - by December 20th.....  standards. Not a cloud in the sky atm...

Mid 50s here currently ( 10 to 10PM ),  Lower to mid 60s still closer to downtown PHX / Sky Harbour.  If it doesn't fall below the 60F low this morning before midnight, Sky Harbour could set a record high low.

Looking around town / down south ..pretty mild.  Colder down near the border ( ..and above 5K ft ) but, those are some reasonably " mild " #'s for late December in a part of the state that are above 5K ft, and as far from any UHI influence as one can get ..Even in Sahuarita and Corona De Tucson.

In the Valley..

The weather here at night has been very mild, milder than most of the Mediterranean region. Even today at 1pm right now a large portion of the Mediterranean is still cooler. Even warmer temperatures are now being forecasted.

Yes, I am reporting 15.1C / 59F here at 2pm now. It seems to be a bit warmer than forecast, although solar heating is minimal since we are literally at winter solstice now!

This is turning into an exceptionally mild December, especially in regards to nighttime minima. Hopefully we don’t have an SSW event now in January that plunges us into the freezer! 😂

No I'm not on the coast but in the far West within the Cologne Bay. It's more of a 8b area but because of the Urban Heat Island effect I'm in a borderline 9a. We are influenced by the Atlantic weather patterns thus our winters are very mild.

After some dry and often sunny weather with temperatures in the low teens Celsius we got hit by a storm today. Big amounts of rain and several thunderstorms. This evening there was an incredible amount of lightnings. There was even some hail. So far the winter has been pretty mild but very windy. Today's high was 12.3°C and the low 9.7°C. ⛈️💨

One last warm afternoon before big changes tomorrow.. 75 currently, 59 tomorrow.

While clear here atm, can already see what lies to the west and southwest on the afternoon True color Sat graphics..  Nice ..and quite active lightning-wise... nose developing just S.W of N. Central Baja, aimed directly at S. Cen. AZ.. Core of the eastward advancing COL quite active atm as well.  Subtropical Jet positioned well to the south across the E. Pac, aimed at Mexico.

CODNEXLAB-GOES-West-regional-eastpac-truecolor-2251Z-20231221_counties-usstrd-usint-map-glm_flash_noBar-69-1n-10-100.thumb.gif.22dfdb1aa0e052f6256f177cd7680313.gif

As the parent COL off San Diego/ far N. Baja  continues advancing east ...w/ perhaps a slight N.E'arly lean as it gets closer to the coast, that active area ahead of it off Baja will only expand / enhance as it noses N.E. across Baja and into AZ over the next several hours. Will the Thunderstorm activity developing within it accompany the arrival of that region of this system as it reaches the valley??  We'll see.. Regardless,  Expect a very WET Friday ahead for the valley ...and pretty much all or AZ east and south of the Valley.

A look at some nice afternoon temps around the region.. before those perfect number take a break..

A wet cloudy, ..and cooler side of mild Friday across the Desert..  Awaiting the next move from our approaching COL as it slides east after the center made landfall somewhere between Tijuana and San Quintin, BCN. Already some Thunderstorm activity poppin over far Southern S.D County, nearby areas of Baja..  This comes after last nights exceptional episode of persistent thunderstorm activity across N and central Baja, a rarity for Winter in this part of the world.

As the COL slides east and some breaks open up in the clouds ..as colder air up top filters in, to help further increase instability,  we'll see what kind of storm activity develops over the area later on. SPC has most of S. AZ under a " Slight Risk " for some feisty and hail-y storms later. Hopefully some of that will extend just a touch further north into the valley.

As it stands atm, reasonably decent rainfall totals across the valley thus far.. .55" here in Chandler so far today.  Hopefully we can double these totals by the time any / all wrap around shower activity heads east tomorrow.  Regardless, looking at the extended forecasts so far today, lookin' dry after this storm, ..so enjoy the soaking.

Maricopa Co. 1 day rainfall totals:  Re check around midnight.

I'm near Athens, on the coast. Not as mild as in the southern Aegean. There most areas are in zones 10b and 11a. My yard is a solid 10a because it is only 300 metres from the sea and protected by a large canopy.

After a full day of steady but mostly light rain and whatever remnants into tomorrow, plus the accumulation overnight Tuesday, it's looking like about an inch (give or take) for the week... works for me.

Appears that all the sub freezing weather for 2023 will have been a few days in late Jan and the one freeze Feb 16 that came right when I was sure winter was over, lol.

12AM rainfall totals update as what is left of the rain moves out.. Maybe a few showers overnight / in the morning but shouldn't add too much more to the overall totals.

1.06" here in Chandler for the day?, Not bad.  Pretty much everyone valley-wide did pretty good as well.

Athens is very mild already. Also much more protected against cold blasts from the North East than places further North. I'm currently experimenting with small P. theophrastis. Are there any native habitats around your area? I know that they occur somewhere on the Eastcoast at least.

" Meterological " Winter " ( ..and Spring  ..yada yada  )  the only one that counts. 😁

Here, one could easily divide the " 4 seasons "  into the following pie slices:

Winter, = now.  Fore-spring, = Mid Jan- mid Feb.  Spring, = Mid Feb to end of March.   Pre or Fore summer, = April - start of June.   Summer / pre Monsoon < Generally the hottest / driest part of " traditional " Summer here >, = June to the 1st of July.

...Monsoon season ..The BEST time of year, haha..  = Mid < ...or early, lol >  July - end of September.  Post Monsoon / fore Autumn, = Late September- end of October ( Typically still seeing highs reach 100 / mid 90s at that time ).  ..and Autumn = ..November( When it finally " cools " off ).   Traditional seasons don't work in the Sonoran Desert.

Using the Dec. averages ( for Chandler )  from Accuweather, this week is the bottom ..Ahem,  " winter "  here.. Temp avrg. wise.  Steadily head upwards from here forward.

It looks like the north coast of Wales is at 53N is already up to 16C / 61F at 3am now. There may be some Foehn influence there, but I can’t say for sure. It’s north facing and right on the coast, so I doubt it actually.

The UK in general across the board is one of the mildest places in Europe again tonight. These are the 3am temps (UK time).

It will be cooling down later next week a bit as we head into January. All the double digits will have to disappear at some point…

In other news, the wildfire at Holt Heath in Dorset is almost extinguished thankfully.

Athens is very mild already. Also much more protected against cold blasts from the North East than places further North. I'm currently experimenting with small P. theophrastis. Are there any native habitats around your area? I know that they occur somewhere on the Eastcoast at least.

Athens is very mild indeed due to being a big city. I am on the north coast of Attica, so very much exposed to northern winds. In fact my yard is very windy and some of my plants get wind damage at times. No theophrastii here that I know. The closest natural population is in Epidaurus, two hour drive away. I was in Preveli in the summer and visited the palm forest. Amazing place. Theophrastii look great when many together although not so appealing to the eye when solitary tbh. I prefer dactyliphera which looks really majestic.

So nice today! And has been, super mild winter so far here 🤞🏻. Been in the 20’s for lows at the lowest. This time last year we had a hard freeze and snow and ice for Christmas, jacked some plants up. Not to mention the negatives later on…IMG_8795.thumb.png.71e711bb54c9241748932e87c051a6c1.png

Min of 53.6f/12c with a high of 59.6f/15.3c with 80% humidity, a mild Christmas eve day. If it hadn't of rained it likely would have gone into the low 60s/16c. Another mild day forecasted for Christmas. It's currently 14.5c at midnight. Even after this very mild week going into January doesn't look too bad. Merry Christmas and hopefully every one has a frost free Christmas! 🎄

A seasonal start to the final week of '23. Looking perfect as it ends...  Perhaps a few light frosts in colder pockets south of the valley the next couple mornings / patchy frost on rooftops / fully exposed parts of yards around the hood, but nothing serious or " abnormal / complain- about worthy "..

Days starting to get longer too... Will be crossing the adding + 1 minute per day mark in about 2 weeks, Sun starts rising earlier each morning right afterwards..

Trends i'm watching for Jan:  If both the current CFS / GEFS weekly, and, more broadly ...w/ a couple more grains of salt.. the  CFS Monthly forecast " thoughts " are correct, Could see a little more rain passing through the deserts at times thru the month, but not seeing any big washouts, like last year from all 3 models.

...GEFS seems more believable than the incomplete and wishy washy data from the CFS monthlys atm..  CFS weeklys seem to be following the GEFS'es lead, though the CFS weekly doesn't show the potentially, slightly cooler than avrg. starts for this part of the U.S. / Neighboring N. Mexico the GEFS does within the next week or two period of the month ahead.

Overall,  Jan could lean mild here..with the first week or two " cooler ",  closer to average / ..a few days just a couple deg below avrg. "  than the last two toward the end of the month / start of Feb.

...We'll see what happens, ....'cuz things can always change..

For now, at least NYE / Day is looking nice  ..and a far cry from last year...  Hopefully, " Much different than last year " is the theme for the final month and 2 ...or 3... weeks of Winter 23/ 24  in the desert.. Crazy, 3-5 day stretch of mid 80s / low 90s,  in mid.. or the final days of.. Feb ( ..and winter )???  Wishful thinking ..or maybe not??  That is the question.. :greenthumb::greenthumb:

Crazy weather here so far. Day maxima are around 18C and minima 8C where I am. Feels more like April. Also, there is no wind and it's sunny every day, so my plants love it. Can't help but think of global warming though.. Today I went out for a walk wearing a T-shirt!

You're missing two " essential " pieces of " winter " clothing, lol  ..Shorts, and Sandals   ..Worn 350 days/yr here.  ..Worn even while shoveling snow in Ohio on a 45F / 7.2C deg afternoon. Wearing of pants?  ..forbidden.   :greenthumb:😁

Whenever I see people from northern England come to London a lot of them seem to treat it like the tropics and wear shorts and t shirts in the winter when it's only 10c outside!

12C / 54F at sunrise this morning where I am. Here are the 8am temps (UK time) and we are amongst the mildest in Europe, again.

Currently 13.1C / 55F here, but temps are up to 15C / 59F in northern Wales at lunchtime.

It is about to cool off quite a bit going into next week, but it would have to sooner or later anyway, by the law of average. The extremely mild nights will come to an end sooner or later, sadly…
