@RyManUtah That's some scary clouds there.

Here, a balmy 83F at the house and no real rain in spite of 60% chances the last couple of days.  If we don't double our total for the month in the next 10 days, we'll end up below our average.

It's been pouring almost on a daily here. Temps have been high too although we have had a week or 2 this summer without rain but its been consistent lately in central Florida where I'm at. Free water for the palms tho! Today was 4% chance and we still got a solid rain.

I've noticed we seem to be in the donut hole, so to speak.  I got an email from the Polk EOC showing the previous day's rainfall totals for the region a few days ago.  Everywhere in all four directions got half an inch and we got zilch.  Soil is still moist in the areas that are under canopy, so at least most of the garden is equipped for low rainfall.

The past 24 hours have seen some light on-off rain showers here, although the accumulated amount is still pretty low at 1.4mm. Whatever happens this will still go down as an exceptionally dry summer. I can't see much, if any more rainfall coming now.

The Met Office have just confirmed the new all-time record UK overnight low temperature. Shirburn Farm near Oxford didn't drop below 26.8C / 80.2F overnight on 19th July 2022. That is an exceptionally warm night for 52N of the equator.

My current yard temperature is 25.4C / 77F at 1pm here today.

Tomorrow I will be venturing down to the south coast as I begin a week long trip documenting English palms. This will certainly be the biggest UK crownshaft palm expedition ever. I will be documenting Archontophoenix, Juania Australis, Kentia's and Rhopalostylis Sapida. The latter of which there are hundreds out there now, setting seed. 99% never posted before on here.

I will visit Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Tresco on the Isles of Scilly. I will also visit the impressive Parajubaea Cocoides at Lamorran Garden in St. Mawes, Cornwall. I am also on the hunt for Beccariophoenix Alfredii specimens in private Cornwall gardens, which I have heard about. I'm also looking forward to seeing those famous 100 footer CIDP's as well on Tresco!

After a slim chance for something rolling through parts of the Valley again today ( Yesterday was a bust on this side of town, again )  First good push of Autumnal- season Westerlies = a hot / drier end of August / start to September / end of rain chances for a bit ahead..

As for what is left of the season itself??

All current forecasts looking into/ through September are suggesting that the season is on the wane, especially up this way. Some activity may persist in S. AZ for a couple more weeks, esp. if Northern Sonora stays active. If we're lucky, they'll be one final push of moisture sometime next month before the " official " end of the season arrives, otherwise ...

The past couple of days have been absolutely gorgeous on the south coast of England. Daytime temps around 75F on the coast. Palm trees galore. This isn't the cold, rainy UK that you guys see in movies lol. This may be the biggest poster for climate change going. All these pictures were taken on the UK mainland. Some of these shots are from the hotel I have been staying at.

The Juania have gone from 1 foot in height to 20+ feet in the space of a decade. The south coast of the UK is obviously pretty mild year-round, which they like. However I’m not convinced Juania will make it in London even due to the higher summer temps. 3 of the past 4 summers reaching 38C and this past summer reaching 40C in London. The warm nights as well (low of 26C this July) will also be an issue.

Under deep shade it's probably possible so it regulates the heat during the day. But it definitely wouldn't appreciate those 26c nights,  also the amount of nights that haven't dropped below 20c has been high this year. The night temperature yesterday was over 20c at 4.50am before the unforecasted morning drizzle we had dropped it down to 19c. Also ruined yesterday's temperature as the long drizzly morning made it so it only reached 23.5c instead of around 30c. Clear skies now though in London and 23c at 11.20am.

I’ve never recorded a min here above 19.8C and almost all mine died. A 26C min would be instant death for a Juania. Mine were all in full shade in the darkest and coolest part of my shadehouse and were kept moist with daily irrigation and it wasn’t enough. I also think the dewpoints are an issue for Juania. I had dewpoints around 22C and higher during the day and they hated it. They need dewpoints to max at around 14C. Juan Fernandez Island is a very mild place.

I think Dorset, Devon & Cornwall had some 20C+ nights as well during the July heatwave, however their daytime temps were nowhere near as warm as London and southeast England. Probably 30-33C maxes followed by 21C lows. Of course that is very different to having a 40C max and a 26C low like London had. I saw unofficial stations in London with 41-42C maximums and 28C lows. Even in full shade that would smoke a Juania. You won’t really get a breeze in London either like you get on the southwest coast, which is probably also beneficial for Juania. During heatwaves the London air is almost stagnant, especially at night. It makes it feel even worse as London is inland away from the coast. I can only see it getting progressively warmer too in the coming years.

My nikau seems fine but Juania australis are probably more sensitive to heat. The dew point that night wasn't that high since the humidity only got up to around 45%. The average temperature that day was though was 90f. Cornwall is much cooler than London during the day and on an average night in summer is around the same temperature as the outskirts of London, unless London is in a heatwave. Central London is always warmer at night though than anywhere in Cornwall from march to the end of November. They might have the odd day they are warmer at night than here because something like cloud there and clear skies here. Winter here is usually just as mild on average  as the mildest places in Cornwall except the Scilly isles they are about 1c warmer in winter on average and are a zone 10b compared to a 9b here. Places in cornwall such as Penzance just escapes the risk of a hard freeze that happen here once very few years (-3c) since they are a solid 10a. I don't get why websites show the Scilly isles on average as the hottest place in the UK since they are only slightly warmer than here on average during Dec Jan and Feb. Every other month is warmer here with the summer being significantly warmer here than there at least 4-5c on average warmer during July and August. From looking at wunderground stations in London compared to the Scilly isles central London is the warmest place in the UK for the annual average temperature.

I was in Falmouth and St. Mawes today, not Penzance. The actual max for there was 23C and partly cloudy/sunny. No rain either. So we were actually warmer than you and it is the last week of summer here at 50N. Not bad for the southwest coastal area.

Have you got any Parajubaea Cocoides growing over there in Perth? I visited a 20 footer today in St Mawes. Originally planted small of course. In theory this shouldn’t even be able to grow on Tresco, let alone here on the UK mainland. It can’t take any frost.

Not sure if they will take -3C in a UK winter though. Maybe in Spain or California. Daytime warmup probably isn’t enough. Any amount of frost will cause them problems in the UK I think. The owner of Lamorran Garden, Robert, told me that they haven’t had a frost there since 1989 though due to the microclimate.

The Archotnophoenix is hidden away pretty well. I didn’t spot it but spoke with the gardener, Jake, who kindly pointed it out in the undergrowth.

I also missed the Rhopalostylis Sapida, which the gardener also pointed out. They should plant more of them!

You will love the garden. I will have to do a thread for it. Loads of big Butia, Jubaea, Phoenix and all sorts of hybrids. If I posted the other photos people would fall off their chairs. I think they have planted stuff cautiously, only to see it thrive. Surely they will plant more kings, queens & nikau’s!

Juania are about 1000 times more sensitive to heat than Rhopalostylis sapida. By comparison R sapida is way easy. I could grow R sapida in Perth but only in shade. They grow way better down here and even do well in full sun. R sapida should be easier to grow in the warmer parts of the UK than Juania.

Parajubaea cocoides can take tonnes of frost. Mine attest too it. They don’t even discolour from it. Nice specimens you posted.

Well yesterday was a cold and windy one. We maxed at 13.8C but most of the arvo it fluctuated between 9-12C as the rain came through. It rained most of last night and it’s about 10C after 8am. Going for a max of 13C with more rain coming. We’ve had just over 140mm this month.

Currently high 70s and steady rain.  This is the right time for it - no sunlight to evaporate it as soon as the clouds break.

Looks like Mother Nature made a call to the bullpen, because we're closing August out pretty strong after that dry spell:

I have been blessed with the weather over the past 6 days or so, while away in southwest England. 22C / 72F this afternoon and sunny right on the coast. Here are a few pics from the past 24 hours or so. All of these palms are located in the Penzance area of Cornwall. Some more Juania’s too…

Just when we thought we'd sent them packing for the year.. 🙃🤬

Could be worse, Far western AZ will be 🥵 it out in the 110+F's for a couple days.

Thankfully, for now at least, it looks like today is the only day with one in the forecast ...even if it stays a tad warm for the rest of the week.  Return of -any- rain chances?  Maybe in 5-7 days? We'll see.

Regardless,  now that September is rounding the corner, Clock will count down a bit faster for any more long stretches of 100-100+F days / 80+F nights..  Now if we could just get more rain, haha.

Last day of winter today. 😀

Cloudy and a top of 16C after a min of 6.8C.

Of course it will feel like winter for a while yet down here, but winter will continue to loosen its grip for a few weeks. The spring equinox is where things start to transform into warmth quicker.

Currently a balmy 27C / 80F here in south London where I am doing a delivery and installation for my company. There are palms aplenty of course and tons of CIDP’s, being London, but this particular Robusta caught my eye. I haven’t really posted this one on here before. No doubt someone will tell me that it is a hybrid. :laugh2:
