    Rat lungworm, a parasite that causes a type of meningitis, has been behind at least 15 reported cases of the rare disease so far this year in Hawai‘i. By comparison, 11 cases were reported last year. Scientists and medical doctors say there have probably been more infections, but milder symptoms are difficult to differentiate from the flu or intestinal virus.

    Hawaii has a number of invasive snail species that have been introduced through travel and trade, resulting in impacts on native snail populations as well as the transmission of certain diseases. Rat lungworm disease (caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis) is vectored by a number of invasive snails in Hawaii and is gaining more attention for its impacts to humans. Malacologists Kenneth Hayes and Norine Yeung (Howard University and Bishop Museum) summarize the diversity and distribution of invasive snails in Hawaii, as well as the distribution of rat lungworm disease and how it affects humans.

    We had that scare a couple years ago on this coast. The media was freaking out about New Guinea flatworms carrying them. I always see New Guinea flatworms under my plant pots so I called FWC. The biologist said the media is way over-doing it (surprise, surprise) and it's really not that big of a risk as long as you keep your dirty hands out of your mouth (and other mucous membrane-y -my term, not his- areas ) and wash you hands.
