I hope the helicopter rides don't get a big drop in business.  They've no doubt been a bright spot in Hilo's economy.  I've perhaps been superstitiously been loath to do much reading specific to the Big Island or plan itineraries ahead of visiting.  Will do the historic sites, Hilo, Volcano, and such.   Signed up for a tour to Mauna Kea summit because I'm nowhere near in shape to walk it.  How could I go to the neighborhood of the world's greatest observatory and not visit the vicinity?

I've joked about shutting down the eruption, and wondered faintly about booking an earlier trip to actually be present while it was going on, or  (if I have some special gift for showing up late) perhaps using special powers to shut things down.  Nah.  Do not want it to resume on Friday.

TheCodesearcher dotcom (Jonathan Matthew Wright) added this drone video of the lava channel down by Noni Farms Road to his site. I know that despite seeing videos etc of this and seeing the lava channel with the persective of the tiny people in some of the footage that I don't really have a feel still for how massive in size this flow is. Nothing can replace being there on the ground to see it in person. @Dave-Vero wonder if when you get there if you'll be able to get anywhere on the ground near any of this by then. We took a helicopter ride around Pu'u O'o when it had a lava lake in it and bubbling, got to see ocean entry. After we left or maybe it was before that, it was fountaining. Kind of regretted the timing of our flight. Still amazing to see and experience but, yeah I get what you are saying.

Ikaika was up in the helicopter today over F8, sometimes a fuzzy image and sometimes the live video seems stalled (but it's running so be patient) but worth a look at the lava inside the cone. He also posted this video with Philip Ong that was live about an hour ago with a status update.  ( https://www.facebook.com/ikaika.marzo/videos/1922965701089290/UzpfSTM1NzQ1NTU1NDQyMDI2OToxMDU2OTQ2NjE3ODA0NDg5/ )

Just listened to the HUB talk with Ikaika, John and Philip and Philip addressed the seismograph readings for ERZ4 sensor BUT shortly after bringing it up the live feed stalled while he apparently didn't know he had no audio or video and when it resumed darn if he hadn't moved on to another topic. So wanted to hear that portion of his talk. Hope someone will post that to his fb account and he'll revisit the topic. Interesting talk today, alot covered and Ikaika talked about what he observed in that earlier morning flight with Bruce Omori and Mick Kalber and what he felt it indicated about the flow. While decreased still a substantial amount of lava being produced by the sounds of it, just hidden from view now. I think they will have another evening talk so will look for it later.

Ikaika also mentioned a meeting being cancelled for tomorrow. Found this announcement on the Hawaii County Civil Defense fb page, so hopefully anyone planning on attending in Pahoa at the high schoool cafeteria will see this cancellation ahead of time, and also not look for the video later.

Another important message in Ikaika's talk was that Hurricane Hector was Cat 4 and may be increased to a Cat 5, so even if it stays further south of the BI there's sure to be an impact from it. Think it was great that the HUB will dispense a hurricane care package of water and some supplies to those who have been affected by the eruption and really in need of these supplies after losing so much. Believe he said pick up at the HUB tomorrow and the following day but if you or someone you know could use these, listen to his HUB video for details.

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere

Air quality in Kona much improved today - still a little voggy, but the blue skies are a welcome change this morning. Hopefully this is due to reduced emissions and not just wind changes due to the approaching storm.

Saw this post and loved the photo. Amazing they caught Halema'uma'u in the background steaming. We were there walking across Iki back in the early 1990s. That photo had to have been taken from somewhere near the top of the switchback path going down from the road. And as I recall it did take us a bit of time getting to the crater lake bottom. One of my favorite experiences. Hope Thurston Tube makes it unscathed. That was a cool experience as well. Guess since I'm sharing my favorite Hawaiian nature spot experiences I would have to add walking down into Haleakala to that list as well. Everyone visiting the islands should be to experience HVNP and Haleakala.

The Guard apparently hasn't been getting paid timely for their expenses in Kauai and Puna's disaster zones and it's created a burden for families. This really shouldn't happen to these guys. Really sad to read.

Thanks @Moose I saw Philip had uploaded it but was busy today and hadn't gotten a chance to watch it there. Just ran to the end of the video where it knew he was talking about it and yes got to hear what he said. So either lava or possibly gasses which I've heard him mention in relationship to Pu'u O'u too.

Wanted to highlight USGS's overflight video of Halema'uma'u changes. Pretty amazing. Nothing like what I remember it from years ago that's for sure.

Listened to probably the last half of the Council meeting where the Mayor and his office staff went before the Council so missed the beginning which I still hope to catch. Thinking Na Leo TV Channel 55 might have it later and if so will post the link. Very curious what all of you come away with from the meeting. To me seems like more than 3 months in and it was already known housing was going to be an issue and surprised Council doesn't seem any closer to doing anything with the State than when it first erupted. As I said didn't hear the entire meeting but didn't get why Hilo needed any funds. I would think Hilo has benefitted from Puna residents spending more time in Hilo. Shouldn't all this Recover Money be earmarked solely for affected Puna in one way or another? Part of me feels, and this is also from watching Mayor Kim before them before that, some members there don't really care what happens to Puna and see it as a drain on resources. Wonder how things would be different if it was Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea that had erupted and wiped out housing and buinesses. If they don't care about residents houses in Puna (no taxable real estate income there), they must at least care about business that could generate income for the State. I was floored to hear the proposal to table Kim's proposal draft until their next meeting in two weeks. Harry Kim must be close to another heart attack over this inaction and seemingly disinterest to get a solid plan put forth. While there was a comment about how great the people there got together to help, I looked at that more as why hasn't the Council done more to structure things to help or are they expecting the people of Puna to do this all on their own.
