My new royal I just planted yesterday ....the other one I had in the same spot died after only having 2 nights below freezing in January ....note to self and everyone , do NOT plant a royal palm in November no matter what the size ....now I have all year for this one to root and I will get a frost cover this winter

Good luck with it. Those things grow fast in heat and sun. Finding a frost cover next winter might be tough.

I just ordered one on the Home Depot web site . $15

I had 3 about that size die in 2010.  Around the neighborhood, the larger ones were fine with a few burned lower leaves.  Once they get 3-4' clear trunk they should be fine.  I now have (2) that are about 35' overall.

It is good to give a palm a full summer to grow before it is challenged. Keep it healthy and see how it does, if it ends up surviving five years it is probably set.

Are u in central Florida ?

My place is near the mouth of tampa bay but inland ~8 miles as the crow flies.  My little royals saw 28F x 2 nights dec 2010.  They also saw a pretty good frost as well. I lost lots of small crownshafts, only those that were covered survived except a 3 gal size kentiopsis oliviformis which toughed it losing all but the spear out and is now 12' overall.  Mine all died after spear pull even after peroxide/daconil treatment.  But around the neighborhood the bigger royals just had lower leaf burn, maybe 1/3 of crown burned on lower leaves.  When you go further inland from me there are no longer term royals.  You can notice this as you go down the west coast.  Some say east of route 41 gets dicey quickly for royals.  I am 2 mi east of 41, as you drive east there are no royals planted out.  there are long term royals 60'+ a mile west of me so I know my place is close to the long term survival line.  But I have planted fairly densely around my royals so they are going to be warmer than out in the open.  My royals are my tallest palms, easy to plant things around them since the crowns are ~25' above the ground.'
