Frightening professional - that team.

Watching two big nice trees changing into dust within two hours, gives me a moment to take a deep breath.

But there was obviously no other option - so, it probably had to be done.

Dave, I am sure you will already have some replacement/new ideas in mind -

best regards

Well, the best option is space

There's an easement by the power company and I have to abide by that. Do they have easements in Japan? (Itai?!)_

Trust me, there will be no lack of palminess. This is just a blip.

How fortunate for you that they did the dirty work for free.  It would have had to happen someday, for the Carlota, for sure.  I am impressed by their sang-froid! All gone and all cleaned up, just like that.  They made it look so easy.  You could plant some ivygeraniums under there, just to cover up the dust... ;)

I am a bit worried how close the Big curley ultimately is to my street light/power pole... I think it just might be ok... but As only the light, my house and a neighbor diagonal to me are on the power lines between the two poles on my property, I decided if the power company doesn't underground it first..., I will.

That's why most of my palms are 30-36" from the street curb... room to lay cable. :D

I'm really delighted. I was gravely contemplating the need to remove the Big C, and was very glad SCE hired  a contractor to do it and not charge me, and make sure I was home. They called only the day before, but I could have changed the date if needed.

Some of the SCE contractors aren't nearly as focused and careful as these guys were. I once had a crew come in the middle of the night - midnight, literally! - and chainsaw the volunteer Washie that was there before, and throw pieces of Washie crown all over the yard.

As I read this and think about Dave's experience, I can't help but think of how inconsistent policy can be on trees and specifically palms going through power lines.  Jeff Brusseau described his nightmares with SDG&E and their tree trimming contractor at our recent visit to his Cuesta Linda property.  Meanwhile Dave gets a freebie on things he was ready to have removed.  On the opposite end of the scale, I walk down my street and see a Queen palm with fronds hanging over and pulling down on power lines (cable and phone are below the power ready to be taken out).

One of the big problems I ran into was that SCE was willing to do these "free removal" deals, but they always "ran out of money" before they got to me. This time they didn't. I suspect a big part was that someone was doing a better job vetting the contractors for efficiency. As noted above, prior contractors tended to leave a big mess, and not do a good job.

Jeff's experiences shows the wide variation among utilities. SDG & E is a very different company from SCE, from what I hear. Among other things, SDG & E used to be (still are?) among the most expensive utilities in the country. When we had that power piracy [nonsense] back in the late 1990s - early 2000s, SDG&E raised its rates by as much as 500% or more.

You are correct about SDG&E historically having one of the highest electricity rates in the country, although I don't know if that is still true.  My point was more to the inconsistent treatment of trees interfering with power lines, and their trimming, even within a particular service provider.  Both Jeff and I are serviced by SDG&E here in San Diego.  Where I live lines going through trees and palms hanging on lines seems to be ignored, while Jeff has them coming out and extending their crane over his property to get to palms well away from the lines.  I sympathize with him, as there is no rationality to it.  Add to that the irony of SCE actually paying to remove the palms which you were ready to have removed.

Bottom line, it looks like they did a great job for you Dave!  While I hear that you want to stay back from their easement, there are plenty of things you can put in that open real estate which will never grow up to the lines.  Have fun enjoying the open space and contemplating its future for a little time.  If you decide to put a Washy there as someone earlier suggested, I'm out weeding, and pulling up seedlings from my neighbors Washingtonia's all the time.  So you know where you can get some free starts anytime.;)

Here's the Stump of Gigas, with the ShoeTM for comparison.

The Shoe is 12.5" or 32 cm long. Size 13.

This was hard wood, you-all, and heavy too. And tough. Walk up to a trunking Caryota and give a knock-knock-knock like on Heaven's door, and you'll get a "clock clock clock" like you're hitting rock, or really heavy brick or ceramic. A royal, King or Washie sounds more like a watermelon, thunk thunk thunk. Much softer.

"How big is it?"

"That's a rather personal question, don't you think?"

"No, no, I meant the gigas stump."

"Oh. Exactly 31 inches 77.5 CM across."

"Impressive!"

"Quite."

I've never understood why people pant trees under or right next to power lines.  I've also never understood why the power companies in FL are very agreewive about the regular trees, but the palms usually get a pass and go right through the lines.  I've seen it time and time again.  At least in ft Lauderdale area.  One of the neighbors behind and caddy corner to the back yard of my friends house, has a large caryota just like yours.  Half dead since it's hitting the electrical lines but untouched. Yet next to it they have all but butchers ficus that looks like a strai he doughnut from so much terrible hard pruning.

There are palms into, very close to, and through power lines down there and large ones at that. It's like FPL just doesnt bother them.

In that same neighborhood there is a large coconut, half dead, less handsome 2 feet from electrical lines.  The side next to the lines has fronds, but they're all dead.  The other side looks perfect.    I'm guessing once it grows past the lines (it def will) it will be fine.  But why plant large palms like that right in / nest to power lines?

Don't know about the Florida policies, but sometimes one just makes a mistake, as I did. I've gone out of my way to warn others, in penance for my sins . . . .

I'm delighted that I didn't have to bear the pain for that mistake that I might have had to. (I can spend the money I saved on smaller palms.)

The Franken Brahea might be next, I had no idea it would get as robust as it has.

This is turning into an interesting conversation about electric wires in general. Feel a new thread coming on . . .

Very true. Lol.

My guess is that most palms end up being planted in such places by people that have no clue as to how tall they will grow.  Though I will say you haven yo be pretty darn clueless about things like royals and tall Coco's.   Next time I'm down there I will take some pics just for this thread just to show what I'm seeing.   Def good you didn't have to actually shell out the money to remove them.  Those jobs are not cheap.

I have to wonder why overhead wiring isninsisted upon in certain areas that are prone to high wind events.  You know, like tornado alley, or the hurricane capital of the United States or possibly even the world.  I know that in most places down there in FL that they can dig fairly deep.  Why not bury the lines?  Would save a lot of money in the long run and would keep power on to more people.  The first thing that went at the house in ft Lauderdale by the sea was the power and that was only from 50mph wind gusts.

I was in Virginia the day several years ago that a crew entered my farm in PR and did an awful job cutting down lots of trees and letting them fall as gravity determined.

Getting the trunks removed was not practical and just yesterday I was working on clearing paths of now mostly rotting wood and weeds. It is so tempting to plant big sun loving palms in that space like some of my dozen Copernicia baileyanas and let the next generation worry about it, but I will dutifully resist.

Enjoy your new patches of sun as I am sure the surrounding plants already are. Glad it worked out so well!

Hmm. Sounds like the Rum Swilling Cavaliers went to PR, then went bananas. (Or Plantains?)

The area near the Gigas is still the same dark mysterious place, except now I have a stump to show everyone. (The queen might have been on my neighbor's yard.)

Had my Caryota Maxima removed last year. No power lines but was starting to bloom. 50+ foot, guy had to climb. To save money I agreed to remove the trunk and fronds. Quite the undertaking. Purchased it as a three gallon from Faith Bishock in 2005. I'm done with Caryota, getting too old to do the removal task. Last Caryota left is Caryota sp. 'Elvis' also from Faith. It's flowering now so its on the to do list. Much easier sawing green wood.
