Back in November I sowed 9 date stones from store bought dates. 3 germinated and the first one took off. It's now June and it's pushing a second leaf.

The other two are much smaller, number 3,the last one out, seems stunted.  I may have to unpot it and check the roots on that one. I'm currently keeping them in my new small greenhouse (early fathers day present)

    Dates don’t need a greenhouse, all they need is (not only love, :wub: but) sun, sun, sun, :D and water! :drool:

    Well we get plenty of water at the moment! It's June and it's like September here! Grey, miserable.

    Does »store bought dates« not mean normal (commercial) edible dates = Ph. dactylifera? (And not CIDP = Ph. canariensis?) :huh:

    Err, not sure. I just assumed that shop bought dates are all CIDP. I know very little about palms.

    CIDP dates are not edible, only for rats, pigs or dogs.:D

    Every store dates are from Phoenix dactylifera.

    So your date babies may look after some time like this one, grown up from an edible (also for man!) (and eaten by myself!) date: :rolleyes:

    Hi Dear Larry,

    As all have said Dates and CiDP palms love sun shine and dry weather and less water..both for their growth and for it to put out tasty fruits.

    Here are few stills of the phoenix palms growing at our house.

    I live in hot wet tropical climatic zone,And during the summer months when its about to put out fruits it would rain and most of the unripe fruits will fall off. That's how it is ! But they grow like crazy..

    I discovered another pic, documenting the growth rate of the Ph. dactylifera: Geminated in summer 1981, first pic in spring 1983 (1¾ year old), second on 1984-01-08 (2½ year old):
