As I've shown you Murcia also has an average of 20.6ºC in the last 11 years but that's a very short term of time... And the averages are very influenced becase the summers are very hot.

My friend this not the real data for Alcantarilla.Ogimet get's the data straight from AEMET. Tutiempo is bs source

South crete is very influenced by foehn winds as well. The warmer stations of greece traditionally belong to Karpathos, Palaiohora, Lentas and Ierapetra, all of them are significantly more to the south than Lindos at 36 N, with Lentas already at 34 N. Like I said the placement of that Lindos station is very poor for a station that defines a zone (and all the nearby stations look quite cool by comparison). Palaiohora and Lentas also are far from ideal (still far better compared to Lindos from what I read back then), but they give a good indication of the very warm weather in south crete, take away 0.3 degrees and they are probably accurate.

So with that in mind I believe your best bet to grow tropical palms and plants is to get a garden inside one of those villages in south crete, with that climate you can grow a lot of palms. You might want to focus on how much water the palm will need and if you are able to address that if needed. Likewise which palms can take the heat waves that strike south greece is equally important.

Happy planting

It depends on the direction of the winds. For example during the winter North Crete can be influenced by S foehn winds coming from Africa so you will see areas with temperatures skyrocketing even up to 30C in January. The best example was New Years day of 2010 when the NOA station of Vrysses in North Crete registered a stunning 30.4C while the WMO station of Herakleion registered 30C .That is an extreme value for January and officially Europe's highest for the month.

Now when S Crete gets N winds you ll have the same foehn effect, this is mostly seen during the summer when the Etesian winds (we call them the Meltemi winds) all over Greece are very common.Specific areas in S Crete like Palaiohora are very prone to this foehn winds during the summer and this is also a factor that helps Palaiohora sustain so high mean maxes in the summer despite being next to the sea.In June 2007 Palaiohora registered a maximum of 45C while the minimum was a stunning 35.8C because the foehn winds were blowing all day long! This minimum falls short just by 0.2C of Europe's highest minimum temperature officially which was 36.0C exactly and was recorded again in June 2007 in the WMO station of Kythera.

Anyhow I am not planning on planting something in Crete.I was just trying to see what could potentially grow over there and I hope someone who lives in S.Crete would try out some exotic stuff!

Are the Canary Islands in Europe? Or Africa?

It's been 5 years since my last post on this thread but we have some new stunning data coming from Greece this time from Lindos in Rhodes! We now have more than 7 full years of data from Lindos and guess what?

Lindos manages to beat the warmest areas of the Canaries islands annually for the same exact period! The mean annual temperature (simple mean) of Lindos stands at 21.89C vs 21.86C for Tenerife South AP which is the hottest area in the Canaries!

Here more information

It appears that Lindos is Greece's champion by far in terms of mean annual temperatures due to the incredible impact of foehn winds in SE Rhodes especially during the summers. Look at the summer means in Lindos...They are off the charts!!
