Seeing Double

Recommended Posts

Walking through the garden tonight with a glass of red wine and had to take a double look.  One of the Dypsis dransfieldii had  double red emergent leaves.  Yes, red wine and double red leaves.  I have about 8 in the garden and have not see them open at the same time before.  It is not suckering yet.

Mike-

At first, I was going to ask "how many glasses of red wine?" before you saw double red :D

But, then your photos proved it was not simply the wine:P

Very nice Mike, I got a couple from Floribunda I'm gonna try here. Did they survive 2010 winter? Or were they planted after that?

Well actually I made of had too much wine.  These were purchased as D dransfieldii, but I think they look more like D. crinita, or D utilis, or D. fibrosa.  All of the 3 types look alike when small, put out the red leaf and have the very fibrous trunks.  I did NOT get these from JM.  They were put in the ground after 2010 and all doing well. What a nice looking group of palms from Madagascar with the deep red leaves.

Charline, I had these and some D. crinita in containers during the 2010 freeze.  Only lost a few.

Here are a few more pics of some of the fibrous Dypsis around the garden.   Some were planted in groupings.

Gorgeous Mike.  Wine is good for the soul whether in a glass, or in the new fronds.  What a difference a 90 minute drives makes!  No chance out here!

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.
